GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a scoreless first inning by both teams, Presbyterian totaled six runs on five hits in the bottom of the second to gain the 6-0 lead.
  • Holy Cross sliced into the deficit in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 6-4. Freshman Dan Vucovich (Lititz, Pa.) and junior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.) hit back-to-back RBI-singles to score sophomores Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) and Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.). Vucovich and Indeglia scored later in the frame on a throwing error, for the third and fourth runs of the inning.
  • The Crusaders grabbed the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Hassell led off the frame with his first home run of his career to make the score 6-5. Senior Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) scored later in the frame on a throwing error to knot the game at 6-6, as Voitik drove in the go-ahead run (7-6) on a sacrifice fly, which plated senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.).
  • The Blue Hose, however, rallied with five scores on six hits in the bottom half of the seventh to gain the 11-7 advantage.
  • Holy Cross made a charge in the top of the eighth inning with three runs on a pair of hits to make the score 11-10. Indeglia led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved over to second two batters later on a walk by Hassell. Ocello drove home Indeglia on an RBI-single and stole second during the next at bat to put two runners in scoring position. Junior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) drove in Hassell on a groundout, as Ocello scored the final run of the frame on a wild pitch.
  • The Crusaders, however, were held hitless in the top of the ninth, as Presbyterian earned the 11-10 victory in game one.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Presbyterian reliever Russell Thompson picked up the win (2-0), as he allowed two runs in one inning pitched. Blue Hose starting pitcher David Sauer tossed six innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits, while fanning a pair. Closer Ethan Wortkoetter earned his second save of the season with a hitless ninth inning, only issuing one walk.
  • Holy Cross sophomore reliever Zach Fox (Los Gatos, Calif.) was charged with the loss (0-2), as he surrendered two runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of work. Crusader second-year starter Ben White (Holden, Mass.) tossed 1.2 innings and allowed six unearned runs.
  • Presbyterian held the 15-8 advantage in the hitting department.

GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross struck first in the opening frame, as Critelli lined an RBI-single through the left side to score Lovullo and give the Crusaders the 1-0 lead. Presbyterian answered in the bottom of the first with a score of its own to knot the game at 1-1.
  • The Crusaders added two runs in the top of the second to go ahead 3-1. Freshman Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) cashed in the first score of the frame on a base knock through the right side to plate sophomore Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.). Hassell then roped a double into the right-center gap to bring in O'Neill and give Holy Cross the two-run lead. The Blue Hose, however, responded in the bottom of the second and tied the contest at 3-3.
  • Presbyterian broke the stalemate with three runs on three hits in the third and added an insurance run in the fourth to gain the 7-3 advantage. The Blue Hose increased its lead to eight runs (11-3) in the bottom of the sixth with four scores in the frame.
  • Holy Cross scored its last run of the game in the top of the seventh, as Lovullo plated Hassell on a sacrifice fly to make the score its final, 11-4.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Presbyterian reliever Hayden Deal picked up the win (1-0), as he tossed three innings out of the bullpen and allowed one run and one hit. Blue Hose starter Aaron Lesiak allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
  • Holy Cross starter Phil Reese (Frederick, Va.) was charged with the loss (0-2), as he allowed six runs on six hits in 2.2 innings pitched.
  • The Blue Hose edged the Crusaders, 12-11, in total hits.
  • O'Neill had the only multi-hit game for Holy Cross, as he batted 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • O'Neill saw his seven-game hitting streak end in game one, as the freshman recorded a hit in every collegiate game in his career. The three hits in game two, however, were a personal-best.
  • Ocello moved into seventh place on the Holy Cross all-time runs scored list with 108 in his career. He also jumped into eighth place on the career hits list with 165 as a Crusader.
  • Lovullo extends his reached-base streak to 11 games, which dates back to the 2014 season. He has reached base in all nine games this year.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross continues its spring trip on Tuesday, March 3 at Gardner-Webb. First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.
