Baseball Defeated By #23 Texas A&M On Sunday

THE BASICS:

  • Score: #23 Texas A&M 6, Holy Cross 1
  • Records: Texas A&M (3-0); Holy Cross (0-3)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Matt Kent (1-0) | L: Ben White (0-1)
  • Location: College Station, Texas (Olson Field at Blue Bell Park)
  • The Lead: Texas A&M's Ronnie Gideon batted 2-for-4 with a three-run home run to help lead the Aggies to a 6-1 victory over Holy Cross in non-conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Blue Bell Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross struck first in the opening frame. With one out, junior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.) both reached base on fielding errors by Texas A&M. Sophomore Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) then drove in Lovullo with an RBI-single into the left-center gap to put the Crusaders ahead 1-0.
  • The Aggies, however, put up a crooked number in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Texas A&M's Logan Nottebrok hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1. Two batters later, Gideon belted a three-run home run over the center-field wall to give the Aggies the 4-1 lead.
  • After two scoreless innings by both teams, Texas A&M increased its lead to 6-1 in the fourth on a J.B. Moss two-run home run. The Aggies pitching staff stifled the Crusaders for the remainder of the contest, as Holy Cross managed two hits for the rest of the game. Texas A&M would hold on to earn the 6-1 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Texas A&M starter Matt Kent picked up the win (1-0), as he tossed seven innings and allowed zero earned runs on five hits, while fanning three and walking none.
  • Holy Cross sophomore righty Ben White (Holden, Mass.) was charged with the loss (0-1), as he surrendered four runs on six hits. White struck out four Aggies, while he issued four walks.
  • The Holy Cross bullpen of sophomores George Capen (Gainesville, Va.), Zach Fox (Los Gatos, Calif.), Phil Reese (Frederick, Va.) and Jon Escobar (Inverness, Ill.) combined to throw four scoreless frames and allowed only three Texas A&M base hits.
  • The Aggies held the 9-5 edge in the hitting department.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Friday, Feb. 20, when it travels to Glen Allen, Va. to take on Richmond at 2:30 p.m. The Crusaders and Spiders will play a three-game series from Feb. 20-22.
