Crusaders Earn Turnpike Trophy Point With 60-41 Victory Over Boston University

  • The Lead: Holy Cross sophomore guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.) scored a game and career-high 20 points to help lead the Crusaders to a 60-41 victory over Boston University in Patriot League women's basketball action on Wednesday afternoon at Case Gymnasium. With the win, Holy Cross earns a point in the inaugural Turnpike Trophy rivalry series with Boston University.

TURNING POINT:

  • Holy Cross used a pair of 8-0 runs in the first half to gain a 13-point, 23-10 advantage. The Terriers would get no closer than 12 points for the remainder of the contest.

HOLY CROSS HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Thomas-Waheed also recorded six rebounds, three blocks and a career-high five steals. She connected on 3-of-8 from behind the arc and 7-of-19 from the floor.
  • Senior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds and recorded four blocked shots.
  • Sophomore guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) totaled 11 points and six rebounds, while senior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) posted 10 points and a game-best five assists.

FIRST HALF:

  • Holy Cross jumped out to an early 5-0 lead (6:42) on a layup by Mifsud, but the Terriers responded with four straight points to make the score 5-4 (5:02).
  • The Crusaders, however, erupted on an 8-0 surge to gain a 13-4 advantage with 3:08 left in the first quarter.
  • Boston University doubled up the Crusaders 4-2 over the final three-plus minutes to cut the margin to 15-8 after one quarter of play.
  • Holy Cross used an 8-0 run over the first 3:03 of the second quarter to go ahead by 13 points (23-10), as Doherty and Mifsud each had three pointers during the spurt.
  • The Crusaders worked the lead to 17 points (28-11) on a trey by Thomas-Waheed with 1:23 left in the stanza, but the Terriers ended the quarter with four straight to make the score 28-15 at intermission.

SECOND HALF:

  • The Crusaders pushed their lead to 20 points (35-15) with a 7-0 run to begin the third quarter, but a 7-2 spurt by Boston University whittled the deficit to 15 points (37-22) with 1:10 left in the period. Doherty and Mifsud each hit a trey over the closing minutes of the stanza to help give the Crusaders the 43-24 through three periods.
  • Holy Cross worked its lead to the largest of the game (50-26) just 1:34 into the fourth quarter, on a layup by junior Madelyn Ganser (Needham, Mass.). The teams traded baskets over the final eight-plus minutes of the fourth, as the Crusaders would hold on for the 60-41 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross shot 34.4 percent from the field (22-64) and 32.1 percent from behind the arc (9-28), while it limited Boston University to 30.0 percent shooting from the floor (15-50) and a 14.3 percent clip from downtown (1-7).
  • The Crusaders held the statistical edge in assists (15-9), points off turnovers (14-12) and second-chance points (11-8), as the Terriers led in rebounding (42-38) and points in the paint (24-18).

THE TURNPIKE TROPHY:

  • The win for Holy Cross in women's basketball gives the Crusaders their first point in the Turnpike Trophy rivalry series, as Boston University now leads the series, 5-1.
  • Hourigan was named the game's most valuable player.
  • This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school that accumulates the most points at the end of the academic year.
  • The next Turnpike Trophy match-up comes up Wednesday, Dec. 30 as the Holy Cross and Boston University men's basketball teams square off in Worcester at 7:05 p.m.

NEWS & NOTES:

  • Holy Cross is now 13-3 all-time against Boston University, and has now won three games in a row over the Terriers.
  • The Crusaders are now 21-5 all-time in Patriot League season openers.
  • Thomas-Waheed totaled career-highs in points (20) and steals (5).
