THE LEAD: Sophomore Scott Pooley (Granger, Ind.) scored for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross men's hockey team tied Bentley 1-1 on Friday night. The Crusaders are now 8-3-1 in AHC action. With the tie, the Crusaders are now tied for first place with Robert Morris with 17 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- At 7:51 of the first period, junior Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) recovered a loose puck in the Holy Cross defensive zone and sent a pass to sophomore Danny Lopez (Barrington Hills, Ill.) who went on a breakaway, yet was unable to find the back of the net.
- At 12:54 of the first period, the Crusaders went on the man-advantage, yet were unable to capitalize.
- The contest remained scoreless after the first period.
- The Crusaders and Falcons each recorded 10 shots in the first period, as the Crusaders went 0-1 on the only power play of the first period.
- At 6:23 of the second period, the Crusaders opened the scoring as sophomore Pooley sent a wrist shot from the left circle that found room above Gabe Antoni's blocker side for a 1-0 lead. Senior assistant captain Brett Lubanski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and senior Castan Sommer (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each recorded an assist on the goal.
- The Crusaders were outshot 11-9 in the second period, and went 0-1 on the power play, while the Falcons went 0-2.
- 5:42 of the third period, Chris Buchanan sent a slap shot from the right circle that found the back of the net above sophomore Paul Berrafato's (Williamsville, N.Y.) glove side, tying the game at 1-1.
- With 1:40 remaining in the third period, Barrett sent a wrist shot from the left circle, which ricocheted off the post on Antoni's blocker side.
- After three periods, the score remained tied at 1-1 as overtime began.
- With 2:39 remaining in overtime, the Crusaders went on the man-advantage for 42 seconds yet were unable to score, as they took a penalty and the teams played four-on-four for 1:57.
- Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the final minutes of overtime, as the score remained 1-1 as time expired.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Bentley outshot Holy Cross 34-30 in the contest.
- Berrafato recorded 33 saves, to earn the win and is now 8-4-1 on the season, while Antoni tallied 29 saves.
- Each team went 0-5 on the power play.
- Holy Cross won 38 face-offs, while Bentley won 33.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The Crusaders are now on a six-game unbeaten streak. The Crusaders are now 9-2-1 in their last 12 games, outscoring their opposition 45-28.
- The tie at Bentley moves the Crusaders into a tie for first place in the AHC standings with Robert Morris with 17 points.
- Pooley has now scored in four straight games.
