The Lead: Four Crusaders had multi-point games as Holy Cross defeated Manhattanville 6-0 in their first New England Hockey Conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Izzy Bagi (Branford, Conn.) got the scoring started with a shot from the blue line at 9:40 of the first period.
- Junior Elizabeth Scala (Rumford, R.I.) would make it 2-0 Holy Cross at the 17:13 mark of the first.
- Manhattanville took a checking penalty at 17:13 of the first, which would set up a power play opportunity that freshman Sam Girard (Dedham, Mass.) would cash in on with 54 seconds left in the period.
- The Crusaders outshot Manhattanville 15-6 in the first period.
- Girard would find the back of the net once again at the 5:14 mark of the second period as she knocked in a rebound shot from freshman Tori Messina (Hingham, Mass.) to make it 4-0 Crusaders.
- Holy Cross outshot the Valiants 14-1 in the second period.
- At 7:15 of the third period, sophomore Kara Violette (Biddeford, Maine) would knock in a loose puck behind the goaltender, giving the Crusaders a 5-0 lead.
- Freshman Julie Matthias (Thornton, Colo.) made it 6-0 when she notched an unassisted goal at 8:33 of the third period.
- Holy Cross outshot Manhattanville 14-2 in the third period.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Freshman goaltender Alex Barnes (North Yarmouth, Maine) earned her second win of the season, as she stopped all nine shots faced for the shutout.
- Netminder Olivia Drew made 31 saves and allowed six goals in the first 48:33 of the game for the loss, while Rose Pijaca stopped six shots in the final 11:27 of the game.
- The Crusaders outshot the Valiants 43-9.
- Holy Cross was 1-for-4 on the power play, while Manhattanville was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
- Bagi (1g,1a), Girard (2g), Scala (1g,1a) and freshman Danielle Doherty (Wakefield, Mass.) (2a) all earned two points in the Crusaders' win.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Matthias has notched a goal in each of the Crusaders first three games of the season.
- Girard earned her first two career goals.
- With two assists, Doherty earned her first career points.
- Scala earned her first two career points with a goal and an assist.
- Barnes earned her first career shutout in net.
- Girard was named the first star of the game, with Bagi and Scala earning second and third star honors, respectively.
