Naemi Herzig wins Olympic Bronze Medal

MILAN, Italy – Holy Cross freshman forward Naemi Herzig has won an Olympic bronze medal as a member of Switzerland's women's ice hockey team.

Herzig and Switzerland defeated Sweden 2-1 in overtime in the bronze medal game on Feb. 19. The Swiss previously defeated Finland 1-0 in the quarterfinals on Feb. 14, before falling to Canada 2-1 in the semifinals on Feb. 16.

Over the course of the Olympics, Herzig played in all seven of Switzerland's games, with the majority of her action coming as the center on the third line. She tallied 144 total shifts of action, while seeing 91 minutes and 25 seconds of ice time.

Herzig becomes just the third Olympic medalist in Holy Cross history, while being the first-ever female medalist and first-ever winter medalist. Both previous medals came in track and field, with Jimmy Quinn winning a gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay in 1928, and Leo Larrivee winning a bronze medal in the 3,000-meter team event in 1924.
