THE LEAD: Five different Falcons each netted a goal as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Air Force, 5-1, on Friday evening at the Cadet Ice Arena in Atlantic Hockey action. The Crusaders went 1-1-0 versus the Falcons as Holy Cross won by a 3-1 score on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- At 8:20 of the first period, A.J. Reid gave Air Force a 1-0 lead when he scored on a stick side wrist shot.
- At 13:58, junior forward Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) blasted a slap shot from the face-off circle, but Shane Starrett was able to make the save.
- At 15:21 of the first period, Kyle Haak scored on a backhander to increase the Falcons' lead to 2-0.
- At 12:21 of the second period and on the power play, senior assistant captain Joe McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) sent a pass to a charging senior captain Matt Vidal (Manorville, N.Y.) who controlled the puck and went on a breakaway, but Starrett made the save keeping the Crusaders off the scoreboard.
- Then just 12 seconds later, Matt Serratore found the back of the net for a short-handed goal to increase the lead to 3-0.
- At 13:06, the Crusaders went on a five-on-three power play for 39 seconds. With six seconds left on the two-man-advantage senior assistant captain Jake Bolton (Ellington, Conn.) blasted a shot that hit the post.
- The Falcons outshot the Crusaders by a 14-5 margin.
- At 7:43 of the third period, Phil Boje tipped in a slap shot by Dan Bailey for the power play goal to take a 4-0 lead.
- At 13:49, the Crusaders went on a two-man-advantage power play for 20 seconds and with one second left, sophomore forward T.J. Moore (Edina, Minn.) fired a shot that ricocheted off the post.
- The Crusaders found the back of the net at15:51, when sophomore forward Danny Lopez (Barrington Hills, Ill.) redirected a shot by freshman Johnny Coughlin (Fairpoint, N.Y.) to the back of the net to make the score 4-1. Sophomore forward Ryan Ferrill (Havertown, Pa.) also posted an assist on the goal.
- Tyler Ledford scored on the power play for the last goal of the game at 18:13 for the 5-1 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Air Force outshot Holy Cross, 32-22 in the contest.
- Sophomore goalie Paul Berrafato (Williamsville, N.Y.) recorded 27 saves, while Starrett posted 21 saves.
- The Crusaders went 0-5 on the power play, while Air Force went 2-4.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Lopez netted his second goal of the season.
- Ferrill has at least one point in six straight games.
