WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore designated player Colleen Ahern (Northbrook, Ill.) went three-for-seven with a double and four runs batted in, to lead the Holy Cross softball team to a sweep of a doubleheader against Boston University at Freshman Field. The Crusaders won the first game 4-2, and came from behind to take the second contest 6-5. Holy Cross improves to 7-15 overall and 5-3 in the Patriot League with the two wins, while the Terriers fall to 19-18 on the season and 4-4 in the conference.
Game 1
Holy Cross jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, with sophomore center fielder Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) recording an RBI double and senior left fielder Sarah Free (Claremont, Calif.) adding an RBI single. Boston University trimmed the Crusaders' lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth, when Brittany Clendenny had a two-run double. But the Terriers would not score again, and Holy Cross added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Ahern. Sophomore pitcher Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) earned the win, allowing no earned runs on five hits in a seven-inning complete game effort, while striking out three.
Game 2
Boston University led 4-2 before the Crusaders scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the score at 4-4 on a two-out, two-run double by Ahern. The Terriers came back to reclaim the lead in the top of the seventh, with Clendenny delivering an RBI single. But Holy Cross responded with two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game, with senior third baseman Alex Gustafson (Medford, Mass.) scoring the winning run. Senior pitcher Julia Barrett (Gardner, Mass.) picked up the victory with a seven-inning complete game performance, striking out two while allowing five runs on 10 hits.
Holy Cross returns to action tomorrow, April 13, when it concludes its series against Boston University with a single game at 12:00 p.m. The game willl be streamed online at 3:00 p.m. on the Patriot League Network.
