The Lead: Jonathan Grad netted the game-winner in the 79th minute for the Bison as the Holy Cross men's soccer team fell to Bucknell, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium in Patriot League action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Diego Ceron (Belleville, N.J.) took the first shot on the goal of the game when his attempt was saved by Bucknell goalie Clarke Fox in the 20th minute.
- Bucknell took its first shot on goal in the 30th minute as junior captain Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) saved a shot by Jesse Klug.
- The Crusaders had a scoring opportunity in the 52nd minute but a shot by sophomore Joey DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn.) went wide.
- Wright tipped the ball over the net to keep the game scoreless on a shot by Klug in the 62nd minute.
- Grad scored the game-winner when he knocked in a rebound off a shot by Klug in the 79th minute. That would be the only goal of the game for the 1-0 final.
KOOLMAN ON THE GAME: "Bucknell was able to capitalize on an opportunity and we were not," said Holy Cross head coach Marco Koolman. "We did not play like we expected to especially on our home turf. I don't think the rain was really a factor because we didn't play as well as we needed to win no matter what the weather conditions were."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Wright made four saves for Holy Cross, as Fox posted three saves for the Bison.
- Bucknell outshot Holy Cross, 15-6, while the Bison had five shots on goal and the Crusaders posted three.
LUKE DUNIVANT AWARD:
- At halftime, the Luke Dunivant Award was presented to senior captain Michael Thompson (Cromwell, Conn.). The award was established in memory of former Holy Cross men's soccer player Luke Dunivant, Class of 1997, who passed away in 2008 after a courageous battle with leukemia. The award is presented annually to a member of the men's soccer team who, like Luke, has inspired others by displaying outstanding courage, commitment to the team and sportsmanship during his career. Past winners of the Luke Dunivant Award are Peter Whooley (2009), Tom Van Grinsven (2010), Jordan Michael (2011), Pat McCann (2012) and Monty Sanders (2013).
