Holy Cross Tops Mercyhurst, 4-1, In AHA Opener

ERIE, Pa. - Sophomore Brodie Sheahan (Lethbridge, Alberta) scored the game-winner and had an assist as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Mercyhurst, 4-1, on Friday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in the Atlantic Hockey season-opener for both teams. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 2-1-0 overall (1-0-0 AHA), while the Lakers fall to 0-5-0 overall (0-1-0 AHA). Holy Cross is a perfect 5-0 in AHA season openers. These two teams will meet again on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

The Crusaders made it a 1-0 game with 1:10 left in the first period when sophomore Ryan Driscoll (Dorchester, Mass.) scored a power play goal. Sheahan sent a crossing pass from the left side to Driscoll who was waiting on the right post and then buried the puck into the right side of the net for his third goal of the season. For the period, Mercyhurst outshot Holy Cross by a 9-8 margin, while the Crusaders went 1-2 on the power play on the only two power plays of the first period.

With 3:16 left in the second period Brandon Coccimiglio tied the game at 1-1 when he tipped a shot into the left side of the net while on the power play. With 2:29 remaining Holy Cross regained the lead when Sheahan scored his first goal of the season as sophomore Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) earned the assist. The Crusaders had 14 shots and went 0-1 on the man-advantage, while the Lakers had 20 shots and went 1-2.

With 8:45 left in the third period freshman Joe Brock (Cumming, Ga.) increased the Holy Cross lead to 3-1 when he knocked the puck into the right side of the goal while on the power play. With 5:39 remaining in the period senior Dale Reinhardt (Livingston, N.J.) netted his second goal of the season off a pass from Brock.

Holy Cross freshman goalie Adam Roy (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made 44 saves to earn his first collegiate win, while Ryan Zapolski stopped 26 shots for the Lakers. The Lakers outshot the Crusaders by a 45-30 margin, while Holy Cross went 3-7 on the power play and Mercyhurst went 1-4.
