Holy Cross Softball Falls At Stony Brook Invitational

STONY BROOK, N.Y.  – Despite recording 15 hits in two games, the Holy Cross softball team couldn't keep pace, falling to Yale 5-1 and Fairfield 8-4 in action at the Stony Brook Invitational Sunday afternoon. With the two losses, the Crusaders fall to 4-10 on the season.

Holy Cross vs. Yale

The Crusaders took an early lead in the second inning when freshman Sam Fregenti (Melville, N.Y.) doubled to right field and then scored on a double by senior Courtney Nealon (Rochester, N.Y.). Four singles in the fourth inning gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead and then three runs in the sixth inning gave them the 5-1 win. Junior Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) pitched a complete game for the Crusaders, allowing three earned runs on nine hits. Yale's Kayla Kuretich allowed just one run on four hits, striking out nine batters. Yale scored five runs on nine hits and committed no errors, while the Crusaders scored one run on four hits and had one error.

Holy Cross vs. Fairfield

The Stags scored three runs in the first inning to jump out to an early lead, but a two out rally in the third inning by the Crusaders cut into their lead. Holy Cross tied the game 3-3 in the fourth inning when sophomore Gwen Reimer (Pottsville, Pa.) drew a one out walk and then advanced to second on an infield single by Belanger. Both Reimer and Belanger scored on a triple to right field by junior Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.). Fairfield broke the tie in the next inning, scoring two runs on three hits. A single by Reimer in the sixth inning led to Holy Cross' fourth run of the day, but Fairfield held on, scoring three runs in the seventh inning to secure the win. Sophomore Camille Trainor (Worcester, Mass.) suffered the loss, pitching four and one-third innings. Fairfield's Kelli Panter picked up her second win of the year. Fairfield eight runs on nine hits and committing one error. Holy Cross scored four runs on eleven hits and committed two errors.

The Crusaders return to action in New England on Saturday, March 27 against Boston University in Boston, Mass.
