Softball falls to Stonehill in Tuesday doubleheader

WORCESTER, Mass. –  The Holy Cross softball team fell to Stonehill in both games of Tuesday's doubleheader at Freshman Field. The Skyhawks claimed an 11-3, five inning, run-rule victory in game one and earned a 7-3 win in game two.

GAME ONE: HOLY CROSS 3, STONEHILL 11(FINAL/5)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Holy Cross: Sophia Roncone (L, 3-7), 2.2 innings pitched, five hits allowed, eight runs (five earned), three strikeouts, four walks
  • Stonehill: Alex Sciarretto (W, 1-2), 4.0 innings pitched, eight hits allowed, three runs (two earned), strikeout
IN RELIEF: 
  • Holy Cross: Bella Nugent, 2.1 innings pitched, three hits allowed, three runs (two earned), two walks
  • Stonehill: Harper Sullivan, 1.0 inning pitched, no hits allowed, no runs
AT THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after sophomore Silje Emery scored on an error by Stonehill's left fielder and an RBI-double by senior Anna Brait.
  • The Skyhawks responded in the top of the second inning, jumping ahead 3-2 on RBI-doubles by Jessica Brill and pinch-hitter Haleigh Reed.
  • Holy Cross knotted it up at 3-3, after sophomore Kate Trudgen brought in freshman Kendall Grady on an RBI-single to left.
  • Stonehill put up eight runs in the top of the third inning, taking an 11-3 lead.
  • The Skyhawks would hold the Crusaders scoreless on their next two trips to the plate, securing an 11-3 run-rule victory in five innings.

GAME TWO: HOLY CROSS 3, STONEHILL 7 (FINAL)

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:
  • Holy Cross: Bridget Mulkeen (L, 2-4), 4.2 innings pitched, eight hits allowed, seven runs (four earned), six strikeouts, four walks, wild pitch
  • Stonehill: Alexa Hospodar (W, 2-5) , 7.0 innings pitched, four hits allowed, three runs (three earned), two walks
IN RELIEF: 
  • Holy Cross: Avery Toddings, 2.1 innings pitched, one hit allowed, no runs, two walks
AT THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Skyhawks scratched across a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • Stonehill's Harper Sullivan traded places with Juli Murillo after doubling to left, putting the Skyhawks ahead 3-0.
  • The Crusaders got a run back after Emery drove in Jenna Alesandrelli with an RBI groundout to first base.
  • Taylor Schoonmaker doubled to right field in the top of the fourth inning, bringing in Natalie Bottiglieri to make it 4-1 Stonehill.
  • The Skyhawks added three runs in the top of the fifth to push their lead to 7-1.
  • Holy Cross added two runs in the bottom of the seventh but ultimately fell to Stonehill by a final score of 7-3
UP NEXT: 
  • The Crusaders hit the road and travel to Bethlehem, Pa., for a three-game weekend series with Lehigh from Apr. 4-5.
