Holy Cross Athletics

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team defeated Northeastern, 3-2, Friday night at the Hart Turf Field.

With the win, Holy Cross improves to 2-1 on the season, while Northeastern moves to 0-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Holy Cross wasted no time getting on the board, thanks to junior Carolina di Gregorio Giralt's first collegiate goal 2:57 into the first quarter. Receiving a stretch pass from freshman Marianna MacLean, di Gregorio Giralt found herself in a one-on-one situation with the goalie before pulling to the right and sending the ball into the back of the net.
• Northeastern tied the game 2:40 into the second quarter, though the tie was short lived thanks to sophomore Martina di Gregorio Giralt's second goal of the season. Getting ahead of the defense, di Gregorio Giralt was able to tap in a pass from MacLean for the 2-1 lead.
• With five minutes remaining in the third quarter, MacLean recorded her first collegiate goal and topped off her four point night. Releasing a reverse chip on the goal line, MacLean's shot tipped off the goalkeeper's glove and into the top corner of the net.
• Northeastern cut the lead to 3-2 with 1:51 remaining, but it proved to not be enough as Holy Cross held on for the win.

BEYOND THE BOX:

• Junior Mia McCloskey recorded five saves in her second win of the season.
• The win marked the first over Northeastern in program history.
• Junior Kendall Brady's defensive save in the second quarter was the sixth of her career.

UP NEXT:

• The Crusaders will continue their homestand on Sunday at 12 p.m. when they welcome Merrimack to the Hart Turf Field.
