WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior
Saskia Williams converted on a stroke opportunity in overtime to lift field hockey over Stonehill, 2-1, Friday night at the Hart Turf Field.
With the win, Holy Cross begins the season 1-0, while Stonehill begins the season at 0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A quiet first quarter saw Stonehill record the lone shot of the frame, before Holy Cross took control in the second frame, sending 12 shots on goal in the 15 minutes.
- Despite the Crusaders' dominance, Stonehill would find the back of the net 1:30 into the second half.
- Holy Cross continued its barrage on net, finally finding the back of the net on their 14th shot of the fourth quarter when sophomore Martina di Gregorio Giralt tipped in a shot by freshman Marianna MacLean with 37 seconds remaining in regulation.
- After a breakaway opportunity was stopped illegally 5:38 into the extra frame, the Crusaders were awarded a penalty stroke following a video review. Williams then stepped up to the mark, sending the ball into the bottom right corner for the win.
BEYOND THE BOX:
- Junior Mia McCloskey earned her first win of the season in net.
- Holy Cross dominated in the circle, outshooting Stonehill, 34-2, and drew 17 corners to the Skyhawks one.
- The win marked the first of her Division I career for head coach Kim Cosenza.
UP NEXT:
- Holy Cross will hit the road to face Fairfield on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 12 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn.
