Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late brace from Halligan powers women’s soccer to first victory

WORCESTER, Mass- Fifth-year midfielder Sam Halligan recorded a pair of late goals and an assist to help lead the Holy Cross women's soccer team to its first win of the 2026 season, defeating Stonehill in a 3-2 thriller at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, Aug. 19. The Crusaders improve to 1-1-1 while the Skyhawks fall to 0-1-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Halligan found senior forward Abby Cushing, who beat a defender and fired a shot into the right side of the net, giving the Crusaders an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.
  • Stonehill leveled the match at 1-1 in the 34th minute, on a Kayla Cassidy goal from just outside the penalty area.
  • The Crusader outshot the Skyhawks 10-5 in the first half and recorded seven corners.
  • Halligan put Holy Cross ahead 2-1 in the 80th minute, drilling a low shot into the left side of the net.
  • Stonehill responded immediately, tying the match at 2-2 on a goal by forward Annie Renz in the 82nd.
  • After drawing a penalty in the 88th minute, Halligan would send her spot kick into the low right side of the net giving the Crusaders a 3-2 lead that they would carry for the remainder of the match. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 
  • Holy Cross outshot Stonehill 22-11 and led 8-7 in shots on goal.
  • The Crusaders held an 8-3 advantage on corners
  • Holy Cross and Stonehill finished with five saves each.
  • Cushing tallied her first goal of the season and the fourth of her career.
  • Halligan recorded her third goal of the season, sixth as a Crusader and the 18th of her collegiate career.
  • Halligan logged her second assist of the season and the 12th assist of her college career.
  • Halligan's brace against the Skyhawks marked her at the Division I level and her highest-scoring match since Nov. 1, 2022.
  • Halligan has recorded at least one point in each of her last four matches, dating back to Nov. 2, 2025. Her performance today also matches her total goals from a season ago (4).

  • Holy Cross: Antriana Mila (W, 1-1-1), five saves
  • Stonehill: Jenna Hamel (L, 0-1-2), five saves
UP NEXT:
  • The Crusaders will remain at home, taking on Brown on Sunday Aug. 23 at 7:00 p.m.
