Baseball falls in series finale to Lehigh Sunday

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross baseball team dropped a 14-2 decision to Patriot League foe Lehigh in seven innings Sunday afternoon at the Ballpark at Fitton Field.

The loss sends the Crusaders to 18-25, 12-11 PL while the victory pushes the Mountain Hawks to 14-28, 7-16 PL.

Senior CJ Egrie was 2-for-3 with a run scored and stolen base in the contest. The stolen base was his 39th of the season and 91st in his career which tied him for third place all-time in Patriot League history with Shawn Harris (Fordham, 1992-1994). Freshman Owen Stelzer also posted a two hit effort going 2-for-3 with a double and run scored.

STARTING ON THE MOUND:
  • Jake Mulvehill: (W, 4-2), complete game, six hits allowed, two runs, one walk, 10 strikeouts, 89 pitches
  • Sophomore Brett Mulligan: (ND), 2.1 innings pitched, three hits allowed, two runs, three walks, four strikeouts, 54 pitches
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
  • Freshman Henry Harding: (L, 2-2), 1.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, six runs – two earned, four walks, one strikeout, 43 pitches
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Egrie: 2-for-3, run scored, stolen base
  • Stelzer: 2-for-3, double, run scored
  • Junior Alex Sandell: 1-for-2, double, RBI
  • Junior Ryan Grundy: 1-for-3, RBI
  • Trystan Crawford: 3-for-3, double, home run, four RBI, two runs scored, walk
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A two strike double with two down for Lehigh in the top of the first gave them the 1-0 lead.
  • Lehigh moved ahead 2-0 with an RBI single in the top of the third.
  • The Crusaders tied the game with a sacrifice fly and Grundy RBI single down the right field line in the third.
  • The Mountain Hawks scored eight times in the top of the fourth to lead 10-2.
  • A two-run Lehigh homer made it 12-2 in the fifth.
  • A solo tater and a RBI single for the Mountain Hawks expanded the edge to 14-2.  
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross continues its homestand when they welcome Harvard (8-25, 6-12 Ivy) for a mid-week non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 28.
  • First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
