Baseball betters Harvard in mid-week contest

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior John LaFleur and sophomore Nick Spaner recorded three hits apiece as the Holy Cross baseball team earned a 12-9 victory against non-conference opponent Harvard Tuesday evening at the Ballpark at Fitton Field.

The win, the third over the lats four games for the Crusaders moves them to 19-25 while Harvard falls to 8-26 overall.

LaFleur finished the game 3-for-4 with three doubles, three RBI and a run scored for his third 3+ hit game of the campaign. Spaner was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with two RBI, three runs scored and a walk. Junior Ryan Grundy hit his fourth home run of the season while senior CJ Egrie had a pair of RBI.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Marco Citro earned his first win of the year tossing three scoreless innings of relief. Junior right-handed pitcher Cole Mascott recorded his first collegiate save tossing 0.1 innings allowing a hit and striking out a batter

STARTING ON THE MOUND:
  • Sophomore Aidan Gilbert: (ND), 3.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, two runs – one earned, zero walks, three strikeouts, 49 pitches
  • Brian Dowling: (L, 1-2), 4.2 innings pitched, nine hits allowed, nine runs – five earned, three walks, five strikeouts, 99 pitches
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
  • Sophomore Marco Citro: (W, 1-1), 3.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, zero runs, one walk, zero strikeouts, 30 pitches
  • Sophomore Cole Mascott: (S, 1)
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • LaFleur: 3-for-4, three doubles, three RBI, run scored
  • Spaner: 3-for-3, two RBI, three runs scored, walk
  • CJ Egrie: 2-for-5, triple, two RBI, run scored
  • Ryan Grundy: 1-for-4, home run, two RBI, run scored, walk
  • Jordan Kang:  4-for-5, home run, two RBI, run scored, walk
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Harvard hit a solo home run in the top of the third to lead 1-0. A single up the middle moved the score to 2-0.
  • The Crusaders took the lead in the third as Sandell tripled the opposite way down the right field line to score Egrie making it 2-1. The next hitter, Grundy put his team in the lead drilling an opposite field shot to left center for the 3-2 edge. A Two run error with two down added a pair and LaFleur pulled a double to right increasing the score to 6-2.
  • In the fifth, LaFleur doubled home a pair going the opposite way and Egrie tripled down the left field line as the Crusaders built the lead to 10-2.
  • Harvard plated four in the seventh including a two-run homer. They loaded the bases, but Reyes stranded the bases loaded with a punch out.
  • An error and a wild pitch scored a pair increasing the Holy Cross lead to 12-6 in the seventh.
  • Harvard posted three in the ninth before Mascott shut the door.

  • Holy Cross wraps up its home regular season schedule on Wednesday, April 29 against Bryant (22-18, 10-8 AE).
  • First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
