WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross baseball team suffered a pair of losses to Patriot League foe Navy falling 9-5 in seven innings during game one and 10-5 in game two Saturday evening at the Ballpark at Fitton Field.
The defeats send the Crusaders to 16-23, 10-10 PL while the Midshipmen improve to 26-14, 13-7.
During game one, junior right-handed pitcher
Thomas Skrobe established a new career-high with five strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief. Junior second baseman
Alex Sandell hit his fifth home run of the season, an inside the park home run in the seven inning tilt.
In game two, senior
CJ Egrie was 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. The home run was his second of the season and the 3+ hit effort was his sixth of the campaign. Freshman right-handed pitcher
Henry Harding struck out a personal-best five hitters as well.
GAME ONE: NAVY 9, HOLY CROSS 5 – 7 INN.
STARTING ON THE MOUND:
- Matt Archibald: (W, 7-3), 5.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed, four runs – zero earned, seven walks, five strikeouts, 123 pitches
- Sophomore Brett Mulligan: (L, 1-2), 3.1 innings pitched, eight hits allowed, seven runs – four earned, one walk, one strikeout, 67 pitches
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
- Thomas Skrobe: 2.2 innings pitched, two hits allowed, one run, two walks, five strikeouts, 60 pitches
- Junior Nick Harnisch: 1.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed, zero runs, zero walks, zero strikeouts, 9 pitches
- Timmy Virtudes: 2.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, one run, zero walks, two strikeouts, 26 pitches
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Alex Sandell: 2-for-4, inside the park home run, RBI, two runs scored
- Junior Colin Brown: 1-for-1, RBI, two walks
- Sophomore Simon Landry: 0-for-1, two tuns scored, three walks, two stolen bases
- Evan Brown: 1-for-2, home run, two RBI, two runs scored
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Three runs for Navy in the bottom of the first resulted in an early 3-0 lead for the Midshipmen.
- Holy Cross got a pair of runs back with one coming on a delayed steal of home from Landry as they trailed 3-2 after an inning.
- A sacrifice fly in the second by Navy upped the score to 4-2.
- Three for Navy in the fourth including an infield single made it 8-2.
- Landry scored via a Brown sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to trail 9-3. The Crusaders loaded the bases and notched another run off a wild pitch, but could not score again in the frame.
- Sandell hit an inside the park home run in the bottom of the sixth to bring his team within four, 9-5.
GAME TWO: NAVY 10, HOLY CROSS 5
STARTING ON THE MOUND:
- Sophomore Derek Volz: (ND), 4.0 innings pitched, zero hits allowed, zero earned runs, four walks, three strikeouts, 58 pitches
- Owen Phypers: (ND), 4.2 innings pitched, five hits allowed, three runs, one walk, four strikeouts, 74 pitches

- Jackson Beattie: (W, 1-0), 3.2 innings pitched, four hits allowed, two runs, two walks, four strikeouts, 66 pitches
- Marco Citro: (L, 0-1), 1.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, four runs – three earned, zero walks, zero strikeouts, 18 pitches
- Henry Harding: 3.0 innings pitched, six hits allowed, five runs – two earned, zero walks, five strikeouts, 74 pitches
