PORTLAND – The Holy Cross baseball team wrapped up its trip to the great northwest and fell 11-3 to non-conference foe Portland Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field.

The loss sends the Crusaders to 4-11 on the season while the Pilots move to 8-6.

STARTING ON THE MOUND:

• William Labonte: (W, 1-0), 5.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, one run, two walks, four strikeouts
• Sophomore Derek Volz: (ND), 2.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, one run, one walk, one strikeout

OUT OF THE BULLPEN:

• Sophomore Jake Lenahan: (L, 1-4) 2.1 innings pitched, five hits allowed, four runs, one walk, one strikeout.

STEPPING TO THE PLATE:

• Junior Colin Brown: 3-for-4, two doubles, run scored
• Junior Van Coughlin: 2-for-5
• Junior Ryan Grundy: 1-for-3, run scored
• Dakota Chun: 4-for-5, double, two RBI, run scored

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• A walk from sophomore Simon Landry with a Coughlin infield single and a freshman Liam Daly sacrifice fly opened up the scoring making it 1-0.
• In the bottom of the second, Volz picked off a runner at first base for the second out of the frame.
• Portland took a 2-1 lead in the fourth via a two-RBI double in the fourth.
• Six runs in the fifth inning upped the edge to 8-1 for the Pilots.
• An error resulted in a pair for the Crusaders in the top of the sixth.
• Insurance runs in sixth and two in the seventh increased the lead.

DUE UP:

• Holy Cross is back in the northeast on Tuesday, March 10 for a mid-week contest at Massachusetts (4-5).
• First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
