Wywoda, Egrie lead baseball to win in Patriot League opener

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The senior captain duo of Jaden Wywoda and CJ Egrie led the Holy Cross baseball program to a 6-1 win Friday in a rematch of the 2025 Patriot League Championship Series over Army West Point at Doubleday Field.

The win snapped a four game losing streak for the Crusaders (5-11, 1-0 PL) while the Black Knights (6-9, 0-1 PL) have lost for the fifth time over the last six games. Holy Cross has won the last four meetings against Army outscoring them 40-15 in that stretch as well as six of the last eight meetings.

Wywoda earned a win for the second time in 2026 tossing a quality start working around base runners and getting key outs when needed. All though he did not record a hit, Egrie's athleticism was on full display legging out a two RBI fielder's choice in which junior Alex Sandell scored from second base, recording a stolen base and making a sensational diving catch in right field.

Egrie has 61 stolen bases and needs three more to become the program's all-time career leader.

Sophomore Jake Lenahan earned the save striking out five across three innings of relief.

  • Chris Barr: 2-for-4, double, RBI, two stolen bases
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross scored first in the second inning when sophomore Simon Landry walked and stole second base. Junior John LaFleur struck out on a dropped third strike and Landry advanced to third. Sandell was hit by a pitch and Stelzer, the nine hole hitter walked with the bases loaded on a 3-2 count for the 1-0 edge. Egrie with the bases still jacked grounded into a two-RBI fielder's choice as Sandell scored from second to increase the margin to 3-0.
  • Egrie ended the bottom of the second with a diving catch in right field and Wywoda struck out a batter in the third swinging to strand a pair at first and second.
  • In the fourth, Connors lofted an RBI single to score a pair with the bases loaded and two outs and an error brought another run home for the 6-0 advantage.
  • An RBI single from Army up the middle plated their first run in the fifth to trail 6-1.
  • Wywoda worked around two base knocks in the sixth and struck out the final two batters to end his outing.
  • Lenahan scattered a pair of walks in his three innings of relief.
