Baseball downed in Portland Friday night

PORTLAND – The Holy Cross baseball team suffered a 10-4 loss to non-conference foe Portland Friday evening at Joe Etzel Field.

The loss sends the Crusaders to 4-9 on the year while the Pilots improve to 6-6.

STARTING ON THE MOUND:
  • Trey Newmann (W, 2-1), 5.0 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, three runs, zero walks, five strikeouts
  • Sophomore Pedro Leon (L, 0-2), 3.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, five runs, five walks, two strikeouts
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
  • Kaden Segel: (S, 1), 4.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, one run, zero walks, three strikeouts
  • Junior Nick Harnisch: 4.2 innings pitched, three hits allowed, one run, one walk, four strikeouts
STEPPING TO THE PLATE: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the top of the second, Brown ripped the first pitch he saw to left field scoring Sandell for the 1-0 Crusader lead.
  • Portland leveled the game with a solo homer in the third.
  • Four straight walks in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double sliced into the left field corner put the Pilots in the lead at 4-1 with one down. A two-RBI single expanded the lead to 6-1. Three more runs in the inning made it 9-1.
  • Junior Gianni Royer singled up the middle to bring home a run for Holy Cross to trail 9-2 in the fifth. Royer scored on a dropped third strike to trail 9-3.
  • Another insurance run from Portland added onto their lead at 10-3.
  • In the eighth, freshman Owen Stelzer singled through the left side for an RBI pulling the Crusaders deficit to 10-4.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross continues its spring break trip on Saturday, March 7 at Portland.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Thomas Skrobe (0-0, 11.25 ERA) takes the hill. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. EST.
