Baseball defeated by Portland Saturday

PORTLAND – The Holy Cross baseball team was downed 13-3 in eight innings by non-league foe Portland during game three of a four game set Saturday at Joe Etzel Field.

The defeat moves the Crusaders to 4-10 on the young season while the Pilots improve to 7-6.

Junior catcher Van Coughlin smacked his fourth homer of the campaign finishing the contest 2-for-4. Freshman Macade Maxwell made his first collegiate start in left field for the Crusaders. He finished the game going 0-for-2 with a run scored.

STARTING ON THE MOUND:
  • Logan Anderson (W, 1-1), 5.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, two runs, one walk, two strikeouts
  • Junior Thomas Skrobe (L, 0-1), 1.2 innings pitched, three hits allowed, four runs, two walks, two strikeouts
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
  • Trey Swygart: (S, 1), 3.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, one run, zero walks, five strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
  • Junior Van Coughlin: 2-for-4, home run, RBI, run scored
  • Freshman Owen Stelzer: 1-for-3, double, RBI, run scored
  • Junior Braden Connors: 1-for-2, walk
  • Nolan Miller: 2-for-5, double, home run, 5 RBI, two runs scored
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Portland struck first in the bottom half of the opening frame via a three-run shot for an early edge.
  • An RBI single with two down in the fourth upped the score to 4-0.
  • A pair of runs in the third increased the lead to 6-0 for the Pilots.
  • With two outs in the fifth, Stelzer smoked an RBI double into the right center field gap and Connors singled up the middle as the Crusaders trailed 6-2.
  • A single run in the fifth, four in the sixth for the 11-2 advantage.
  • Coughlin belted his fourth tater of the season in the eighth before Portland completed the run rule win in the bottom half.
DUE UP:
  • Holy Cross concludes its spring break trip on Sunday, March 8 at Portland.
  • Sophomore left-handed pitcher Derek Volz (0-1, 19.96 ERA) takes the hill. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. EST.
