Women’s basketball completes 12 point fourth-quarter comeback against BU; Secures No. 2 Seed in Patriot League Tournament

BOSTON- The Holy Cross women's basketball team rallied from down 12 points in the fourth quarter and completed a thrilling comeback on the road to defeat Boston University by a final score of 64-58 at Case Gym on Wednesday night. 

Trailing 51-39, the Crusaders went on a 25-7 run over the final 9:40 and secured their fourth 20+ win season in the last five years. The run featured a stretch that saw Holy Cross score 13 unanswered points over 5:17, allowing them to go ahead 52-51 at the 3:50 mark in the fourth.

With the win, the Crusaders improve to 20-9 overall and 14-4 in the Patriot League, while the Terriers dropped to 10-19 and 6-11.

Senior guard Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly led all scorers with a double-double that featured career-high 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor, 4-of-8 from three, and 4-of-4 from the line. She added 11 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the win. Senior forward Meg Cahalan tallied 18 points on 5-of-16 shooting from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 at the free-throw line, adding four rebounds and an assist. 

Boston University was led in scoring by Bella McLaughlin who scored 17 points on 6-of-15 shooting in the loss. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders opened the game at a frenetic pace, outscoring the Terriers 11-4 in the first three minutes. Junior guard Kendall Eddy knocked down a pair of three-pointers, while Donnelly added five points.
  • Donnelly drained her second three-pointer of the game and made a contested layup to extend Holy Cross' lead to 18-8 with 2:59 to play in the first.
  • The Terriers responded with a 7-0 run to close the first quarter, trimming Holy Cross' lead to 18-15.
  • BU's Audrey Ericksen tied the game 20-20 with 7:43 to play in the second after sinking a straight-away three.
  • Boston University's Kate Allard made an and-one layup and made the free throw, giving the Terrier a 23-20 lead.
  • The Crusaders responded with a 4-0 run ahead of the under-five media. Junior guard Janie Bachmann grabbed an offensive rebound and finished a layup through a pair of BU defenders. Donnelly reclaimed the lead for Holy Cross by knocking down both free throws on a trip to the line, making it 24-23.
  • Boston University pulled ahead heading into the break, going on a 9-2 run and knocking down back-to-back three-pointers. The Terriers would take a 32-28 lead into the locker room.
  • Flanagan made a jumper 11 seconds into the second half to cut the deficit to 32-30.
  • The Terriers extended on their lead in the third, leading by as much as 10 in the closing minutes.
  • Donnelly knocked down her third three of the game with 1:03 left in the third. Holy Cross would enter the fourth trailing 48-39.
  • Inés Monteagudo extended BU's lead to 12 with a three 20 seconds into the fourth quarter.
  • The Crusaders rallied with and scored 13 unanswered points over the next 5:17 and took a 52-51 lead on a Cahalan made jumper with 3:50 to play. 
  • BU's Ante Adler swung the lead back to the Terriers after making a hook shot with 3:33 remaining to bring it to 53-52.
  • Cahalan gave the Crusaders the lead for good at the 3:16 mark in the fourth, going ahead 54-53 on a pull up jump shot from the top of the key.
  • Monteagudo got it to within two for BU after hitting a three with 1:42 left, but Holy Cross would hold on and secure the 64-58 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Holy Cross sweeps the regular-season series with Boston University. The Crusaders improved to 27-16 all-time against the Terriers, winning seven of the last nine meetings.
  • The Crusaders secure their fourth 20+ win season in five years.
  • Holy Cross finishes the regular season 9-6 on the road.
  • Donnelly set a new career high in points for the second straight game, finishing with 24. Her previous career best of 21 points came last Saturday at Loyola.
  • Donnelly recorded her second straight double-double of the season.
  • Donnelly tallied double figures for the 10th time this year and the 20th time in her career.
  • Donnelly recorded 10 or more rebounds for the fifth time this season.
  • Cahalan finished in double figures for the 23rd time this season and the 42nd time in her career.

  • Holy Cross returns home to the Hart Center and will compete in the Patriot League Quarterfinals on Monday, Mar. 9. 
  • After clinching a first-round bye, the Crusaders will await the results of the first-round matchup between No. 7 Bucknell University and No. 10 Colgate University, who face off on Saturday, Mar. 7.
