Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Donnelly leads the way in women's basketball victory over Loyola

BALTIMORE- Senior guard Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly poured in a career high 21 points  on Saturday afternoon to lead the Holy Cross women's basketball team to a 66-48 victory over Loyola (Md.) at the Reitz Center.

With the win, the Crusaders improve to 19-9 overall and 13-4 in the Patriot League, while the Greyhounds dropped to 12-16 and 8-9.

Donnelly led all scorers with a double-double, tallying 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 6-of-10 from deep. She added 10 rebounds, one block and an assist in the win. Junior guard Kendall Eddy totaled 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, along with four boards and two assists. Senior forward Meg Cahalan posted 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go with three rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal. Junior guard Janie Bachmann chipped in seven points off the bench, shooting 1-of-4 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. She also had three rebounds, two steals, one assist, and a block. 

Loyola was led in scoring by Kimmie Hicks who scored 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting in the loss. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders opened the game on a 10-0 run, sparked by two three-pointers from Donnelly in the first two minutes of action.
  • The Greyhounds broke through at the 6:31 mark of the first quarter when Lex Therien converted a contested layup for their first points of the game, trimming the lead to 10-2.
  • Holy Cross stayed hot from beyond the arc, as Eddy and Donnelly each connected from three-point range to extend the lead to 16-4.
  • Eddy scored four points over the final two minutes of the opening quarter, helping the Crusaders take a 23-15 lead at the end of the first.
  • An 11-3 run by the Greyhounds cut Holy Cross' lead to five with 5:03 remaining in the first half, bringing the score to 31-26.
  • After calling a timeout, the Crusaders answered with an 11-4 run and carried a 42-30 lead into the break.
  • Donnelly hit two more three-pointers in the third quarter, including a sidestep triple at the 6:46 mark for her sixth of the game, pushing the lead to 48-37.
  • Cahalan scored twice in a 49-second span to give the Crusaders a 52-37 lead with 1:43 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Loyola's Amandine Amorich scored on a layup and knocked down a three in the final minutes of the third, trimming Holy Cross' lead to 52-42 heading into the fourth.
  • Amorich and Hicks fueled a 6-0 run to open the fourth quarter, cutting the score to 52-48 and forcing the Crusaders to call a timeout.
  • The Crusaders closed the game on a dominant 14-0 run and held Loyola scoreless over the final 7:57 to secure a 66-48 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Holy Cross sweeps the regular-season series with Loyola. The Crusaders are now 19-8 against Loyola all-time and 18-7 as Patriot League opponents. 
  • The Crusaders have won 14 of the last 15 match-ups dating back to 2019.
  • Holy Cross improves to 8-6 on the road this season.
  • The Crusaders finished 42.9 percent from beyond the arc compared to 15.8 percent from Loyola.
  • Donnelly netted a career-high 21 points, marking the first 20-point game of her career.
  • Donnelly tallied double figures for the ninth time this year and the 19th time in her career.
  • Donnelly recorded her second double-double of the season.
  • Cahalan finished in double figures for the 22nd time this season and the 41st time in her career.
  • Eddy posted double figures for the ninth time this season and the 20th time in her career.
