Women’s basketball cruises to victory over Bucknell on Senior Day

WORCESTER, Mass. — All four Holy Cross women's basketball seniors finished in double figures on Saturday afternoon to propel the Crusaders to a 63-41 victory over Bucknell at the Hart Center on Senior Day.

With the win, the Crusaders improve to 18-9 overall and 12-4 in the Patriot League, while the Bison dropped to 10-17 and 6-10.

Senior guard Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly led all scorers with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and 4-of-5 from three. She also had seven rebounds, one block and a steal. Senior forward Meg Cahalan posted 13 points on 3-of-8 shooting, made 6-of-6 free throws and added three boards. Senior guard Kaitlyn Flanagan poured in 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting to go along with six assists, three steals and a rebound. Senior guard Simone Foreman finished with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting, four boards, and two assists.

Bucknell was led in scoring by Reese Zemitis who scored nine points on 4-of-9 shooting in the loss. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders and Bison exchanged baskets to begin the game and went into the under-five media tied 6-6.
  • Holy Cross' offense came alive with two minutes left in the first, going on a 9-2 run that included three Flanagan layups and a made three by Donnelly making it 15-8 Crusaders.
  • Donnelly's second three of the game and free throw makes by Cahalan and Flanagan helped push the Crusaders' lead to double-digits, 21-9.
  • Tuana Coskun made a jumper and Zemitis got a floater to fall, trimming the deficit to 21-13 at the under-five in the second.
  • A pair of threes by Mariah Hardy and Isabella Casey narrowed the Holy Cross lead to five points with 1:51 to play in the half, 27-22.
  • Foreman sank two free throws with 32 seconds remaining in the first half, sending the Crusaders into the break with a 29-22 advantage. 
  • Holy Cross opened the second half on a 12-5 run, highlighted by three-pointers from Flanagan and Cahalan, and forced Bucknell to burn a timeout with 6:11 remaining in the third, 41-27.
  • The Crusaders kept their foot on the gas and built up a 22 point lead heading into the fourth, 50-28.
  • Donnelly and freshman Asia Wilson both cashed in from long range helping to increase Holy Cross' lead to 59-37 with 4:33 to play.
  • The Crusaders would hold on and secure the 63-41 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Holy Cross sweeps the regular-season series with Bucknell. The Crusaders are now 56-26 vs the Bison all-time. 
  • The Crusaders extended their win streak against Bucknell to nine-straight, dating back to Dec. 30, 2022.
  • Holy Cross improves to 11-3 at Hart Center Arena this season.
  • With 12 points today, Flanagan increases her career point total to 1,015 career points and moves from 36th to 33rd all-time. She surpassed Phyllis Townsend '84 and Sarah Placek (1,008).
  • Cahalan finished in double figures for the 21st time this season and the 40th time in her career.
  • Foreman recorded double digits for the 11th time this season and the 37th time in her career.
  • Flanagan posted double figures for the 10th time this season and the 43rd time in her career.
  • Donnelly tallied double figures for the eighth time this year and the 18th time in her career.

  • Holy Cross returns to the court next Saturday, Feb. 28 when they travel to Baltimore to face Loyola (Md.).
