Balanced attack leads men’s lacrosse to win over Le Moyne

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team defeated Le Moyne, 12-5, Saturday afternoon at Kuzniewski Field.

With the win, Holy Cross improves to 3-2 on the season, while Le Moyne remains winless at 0-3 on the campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The two teams traded goals in the first quarter, finishing the frame tied at 3-3, benefiting from goals by junior Ryan Botek, freshman Aedan Cassidy, and senior Will Messineo.
  • Le Moyne opened the second quarter with a goal, but eight-straight strikes by the Crusaders' gave them the 11-4 lead going into the final frame. Cassidy tallied three scores over the stretch, while freshman Caleb DaRocha picked up his first two collegiate goals. Sophomore Andrew Ottomanelli tacked on two of his own, while junior Bo Webster netted his second of the year.
  • Le Moyne scored their lone goal of the second half seven minutes into the final frame before sophomore Owen Tunney capped off the contest with his eighth of the season just over a minutes later.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Senior JR Long recorded five saves in his third win of the season.
  • With their goals today, Tunney and Cassidy have recorded at least a goal in all five of the Crusaders' games this season, while Botek has recorded at least a point in each contest.
  • Freshman Shane McDonnell continued his blistering pace at the faceoff 'X', recording 11 wins on 16 attempts (.688 win percentage) with five ground ball pickups. The two-time reigning Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week sits in second in the league among qualified faceoff specialists with a .631 success rate (53-for-84) and sits in third overall in the league with 27 ground balls.

  • Holy Cross will have a quick turnaround as they head to UMass Lowell on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
  • Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. at Cushing Field in Lowell, Mass.
