Flanagan surpasses 1,000 career points in women's basketball victory over Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. — A milestone-setting night for senior guard Kaitlyn Flanagan highlighted a 53-44 victory for the Holy Cross women's basketball team, with the Crusaders taking down Lafayette at the Kirby Sports Center on Wednesday night.

Flanagan became the 37th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points with her pull-up jumper in the fourth quarter, reaching the milestone with a nine-point performance. Flanagan's career point total now stands at 1,003 points. She also added eight boards, five assists, and a steal in her record-setting performance.

With the win, the Crusaders improve to 17-9 overall and 11-4 in the Patriot League, while the Leopards dropped to 9-17 and 5-10.


Senior forward Meg Cahalan led all scorers with 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor. She added eight rebounds and three assists in her 20th double-figure scoring effort of the season. Senior forward Simone Foreman and junior guard Janie Bachmann each tallied eight points in the win. Foreman also posted four rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while Bachmann added four boards, three assists, and a block. Senior guard Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly led the Crusaders with nine rebounds, and also registered a block and a three-pointer.

Lafayette was led in scoring by 14 points off the bench from Teresa Kiewiet. Haylie Adamski added eight points for the Leopards in the loss. Holy Cross held the six remaining scorers for Lafayette to under five points each.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Crusaders opened the game on a 5-0 run that was sparked by a contested jumper by Flanagan and a Foreman three.
  • Lafayette's offense would get going by way of the triple, as a trio of early makes narrowed the Crusaders' lead to three, 14-11.
  • Freshman Asia Wilson knocked down a jumper and Foreman swished her second three of the game to give Holy Cross a 19-11 lead to end the first quarter.
  • The Crusaders continued to cash in from distance as Donnelly was true from beyond the arc to extend the lead to 22-11 with 9:42 to play in the second.
  • The Leopards continued to chip away at the Crusader lead, getting to the charity stripe and sinking five free throws over the span of three minutes  to cut within 24-18.
  • Flanagan found space on a broken play with 1:30 to go in the second and drained a three, to give Holy Cross a 29-21 lead heading into the break. 
  • Holy Cross and Lafayette traded blows to open the third quarter. In that stretch, Cahalan converted on a layup, junior guard Kendall Eddy canned a three, and Bachmann made a pair of free throws to extend the Crusader lead to double digits, 36-25.
  • The Crusaders went on a 14-5 run for nearly six minutes of the third to push their lead to 15, 43-28.
  • Flanagan joined the 1,000-point club after sinking a pull-up jumper from the left elbow with 8:50 to play in the fourth quarter, giving the Crusaders a 45-31 lead. 
  • An 11-4 run by the Leopards would bring the deficit back to single digits, 49-24, with 3:37 to play.
  • A pair of makes by Cahalan and Flanagan gave the Crusaders an 11-point cushion, 53-42, with 2:42 remaining.
  • The Crusaders held Lafayette to just two points over the final 2:42 and come away with the 53-44 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Holy Cross finishes with a regular-season sweep of Lafayette. The Crusaders are now 71-12 vs the Leopards all-time. 
  • Holy Cross extends its win streak to 14 in a row against Lafayette. The streak began back on Feb. 2, 2019 with a 56-53 overtime home victory.
  • The Crusaders picked up their seventh win on the road this season.
  • Flanagan becomes the 37th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points. She now stands at 36th all-time with 1,003 points after surpassing Brittany Keil '07 (1,000 pts).
  • With 508 career assists, Flanagan is only the third player in program history with 1,000+ points and 500+ assists, joining Alex Smith (2010-2014; 1,644 points, 568 assists) and Anna Kinne (1996-00; 1,234 points, 532 assists).
  • Cahalan finished in double figures for the 20th time this season and the 39th time in her career.
