WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 60-57 decision to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in Patriot League action on Wednesday night at the Hart Center Arena in Worcester.
Holy Cross drops to 8-5 (2-1 PL), while Lehigh improves to 7-7 (3-0 PL).
Trailing by one possession in the final minute, the Crusaders had a few looks to tie the game but came up just short in the setback.
Junior
Kendall Eddy had 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting to lead Holy Cross and seniors
Meg Cahalan and
Simone Foreman added 12 points apiece.
Lily Fandre paced Lehigh with 23 points and Jessie Ozzauto contributed 17.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Mountain Hawks got off to a strong start and led 14-5 with 5:40 to play in the first quarter. From there, the Crusaders battled back to within six before Lehigh took a 22-13 lead after one.
- Cahalan sank a pair of free throws to spark an 8-2 run that began the second quarter and Foreman capped things off with a layup that brought Holy Cross within three at 24-21.
- Lehigh was able to extend the lead back to nine later in the period, but the Crusaders once again fought back and trimmed the deficit to 35-30 at halftime.
- A free throw from junior Janie Bachmann brought the hosts within two at 37-35 with 5:38 to play in the third quarter before the Mountain Hawks used an 11-6 stretch that made it a 48-41 game after three.
- Holy Cross would not go quietly and used a pair of threes from Eddy along with one from senior Kaitlyn Flanagan that cut the deficit to three at 54-51 with 6:05 to play.
- Both defenses held strong down the stretch and despite Lehigh taking a five-point lead with under two minutes remaining, Eddy buried a three that drew the Crusaders within a pair to aid in the comeback effort.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Eddy has hit four threes in three of her last four games and is shooting 12-of-21 (57.1%) from beyond the arc during that stretch.
- As a team, the Crusaders shot 22-of-52 (42.3%) from the floor and Lehigh was 22-of-47 (46.8%).
- Holy Cross shot a season-best 40.0% (6-of-15) from beyond the arc on the night and held a 30-28 edge in the rebounding battle behind Foreman's seven boards.
- Both teams found struggles at the free throw line as the Crusaders were 7-of-14 (50.0%) and Lehigh was 9-of-14 (64.3%).
