ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team used an 11-2 fourth quarter run to take the lead and notched a 66-55 road victory over the Navy Midshipmen in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall.
The Crusaders have won five straight and improve to 8-5 overall (2-0 PL), while Navy falls to 7-6 (1-1 PL).
Things were tied at 47 apiece with 7:37 to play when senior
Kaitlyn Flanagan hit a layup then junior
Kendall Eddy stole the ensuing inbounds pass and buried a three for a 52-47 advantage.
Freshman
Asia Wilson capped the 11-2 run with a layup and the Crusaders held a 58-49 advantage with 3:24 to play.
Navy was unable to get any closer than seven the rest of the way and Holy Cross went 6-of-8 from the free throw line over the final 1:13 to secure the victory.
Senior
Meg Cahalan led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting and Eddy tallied a career-high 21 points including four threes.
Juliana Almeida and Zanai Barnett-Gay paced the Midshipmen with 15 points apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Navy started out strong and led 16-9 in the first quarter before a Flanagan three and an Eddy layup sliced the deficit to a pair at 16-14. The hosts used a late jumper by Almeida to take a 20-16 lead after one.
- The two sides traded baskets for much of the second quarter before Eddy sank a pair of threes as part of a 7-0 run over the final 2:14 to give Holy Cross a 33-30 advantage at the half.
- Following a four-point play for Eddy in the opening minute of the third quarter, the Midshipmen regained the lead at 39-37 with a 7-0 run. The two teams combined for three points over the next three plus minutes and a Cahalan three followed by a Wilson jumper in the late stages helped give the Crusaders a 45-44 edge headed to the fourth.
- Barnett-Gay made one-of-two from the line to create the 47-all deadlock that set the stage for the five-point swing from Eddy and Flanagan in a span of four seconds.
- Holy Cross' defense limited the Midshipmen to eight points over the final eight minutes and forced five turnovers during that stretch.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Cahalan's 22 points marked her fourth 20-point game of the season and the senior captain also added three rebounds, three assists and a block.
- Eddy's 21 points eclipsed her previous career-best of 19 that had been set in a win over Lafayette on Jan. 11, 2025.
- Elsewhere for the Crusaders, Flanagan added seven points and six assists and Wilson posted four points, two rebounds and a steal in a season-high 21 minutes.
- Holy Cross held a commanding 48-34 edge on the glass behind a season-high 12 boards from senior Simone Foreman and nine from junior Janie Bachmann, which tied a career-high.
- Navy entered play on Saturday as the top rebounding team in the Patriot League.
- 11 of the 48 boards came on the offensive end as head coach Candice Green's team has now collected double-digit offensive rebounds four times in the last five games.
- The Crusaders shot 25-of-59 (42.4%) from the floor, while holding the Midshipmen to a 31.7% clip (20-of-63) and a season-low 55 points.
