HAMILTON, N.Y. – Sophomore guard
Tyler Boston scored a game-high 20 points as the Holy Cross men's basketball team fell, 79-74 to Patriot League opponent Colgate Wednesday evening on Cottrell Court.
Boston was 8-for-13 (61.5 percent) from the field with five assists and four rebounds for the Crusaders (8-14, 3-6 PL). Junior guard
DeAndre Williams added 13 points and a game-high six boards while junior guard/forward
Gabe Warren added 13 points as well.
Colgate (13-9, 7-2) was led by Jalen Cox who scored 16 points with eight assists and a pair of rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Holy Cross hit all four of their opening shots which was part of a 9-2 burst as Williams, freshman forward Aiden Disu, Warren and a Boston triple pushed them ahead 2:14 into the contest. Colgate answered producing 15 straight to lead 17-9 following a second chance putback with 12:29 left in the half. A Warren hoop and harm started a 11-4 Crusader binge to pull them within one, 21-20 following a Williams wing three-pointer with 8:53 on the clock.
- Colgate rebuilt the lead and sophomore forward Aidan Richard tipped home a missed three-ball putting Holy Cross down three, 29-26 with 3:17 left in the half. Sophomore forward Chuck Hare pulled his team within one via a second chance score and Richard canned a corner three to tie the score at 33 all. Colgate led 35-33 at the break.
- In the second half, the Crusader started the new 20 minutes on a 12-5 run with Williams scoring half those points while junior guard/forward Joe Nugent and Richard drained triples as Holy Cross led 45-40 with 15:53 left. The hosts came within two, 49-47, but Holy Cross kept at it as Hare checked back into the game and made an immediate impact with a dunk and an and1 increasing the edge to 57-49.
- Warren had another strong take through the lane and traffic making his shot through contact and the free throw to establish a nine point lead for the Crusaders, 63-54 with 8:21 remaining. Colgate roared back with a 12-4 burst to come within a point, 67-66 with 5:11 to play. A Warren layup, a Nugent three and a Boston post score put Holy Cross ahead 74-68. Colgate scored the final 11 points to win the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Hare scored a career-high seven points in nine minutes off the bench.
- Williams and Warren combined to go 12-for-15 (80.0 percent) from the field.
- Boston tallied his fourth 20+ point effort of the season and his sixth contest with five or more assists.
