WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman forward
Jack Fiedler scored with 6:54 remaining to break a 2-2 tie and lift the Holy Cross men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Rhode Island at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The Crusaders improve to 3-3-3 overall, while the Rams fall to 1-6-2 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Rhode Island opened the scoring in the fifth minute, when Tim Huhnholz one-timed a cross from Tiago Barriguinha following a corner kick.
• Freshman forward
Liam Heneghan tied the game at 1-1 in the 11th minute, breaking behind the defense with a long pass from freshman defender
Luke Myers, before putting the ball just inside the right post from the top of the box.
• The Rams reclaimed the lead in the 12th minute, as Kyler Vojvodic knocked in a cross by Theo Harris.
• Holy Cross made the score 2-2 in the 26th minute, when freshman defender
Cayden Walton redirected a header by junior midfielder
Jeb Snead into the net, after a corner kick by freshman forward
Archie Hatcher.
• Fiedler then gave the Crusaders the lead in the 84th minute, one-timing a pass from junior defender
Kyle Martell from 20 yards out at the top of the box.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• Rhode Island finished the game with a 14-13 advantage in shots and an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
• Both Fiedler and Heneghan scored the first goal of their collegiate careers.
• Holy Cross now stands 3-0-2 over its last five games, its longest unbeaten streak since starting the 2021 season 3-0-2.
