Football suffers setback at Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Holy Cross football team fell to Yale, 28-10, on Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Yale Bowl.

Sophomore linebacker Lathan Croley and junior linebacker Cam Santee tied for a team-high 13 tackles; Santee had 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble while Croley also contributed on a sack. Senior safety Tommy Bestpitch also contributed double-digit tackles, with 11 on the day.

Junior receiver Charly Mullaly scored his first touchdown of the season, tallying 38 yards on five receptions. Freshman Joseph Williams had a 64-yard reception and carried the ball five times for 18 yards on the ground; he also totaled 83 yards on five kickoff returns.

Yale's Josh Pitsenberger scored three of the team's four touchdowns on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Bulldogs marched down the field for a 12-play, 76-yard opening drive to take an early 7-0 lead — the only points of the first half.
  • A 64-yard reception by Williams on the Crusaders' first drive of the second half helped set up a 23-yard field goal for senior Luis Palenzuela, cutting the Yale advantage to 7-3 with 11:08 left in the third.
  • The Bulldogs immediately responded with Pitsenberger's second touchdown of the day to extend the lead to 14-3.
  • A 29-yard touchdown pass for the Bulldogs extended the lead to 21-3 after three quarters, and Pitsenberger scored again to make it 28-3 early in the fourth.
  • Holy Cross sophomore quarterback Cal Swanson connected with Mullaly for a seven-yard touchdown with 56 seconds left in the game, making the score 28-10.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Both Croley and Santee had career highs in tackles.
UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross opens Patriot League action with a road matchup at Fordham on Saturday, Sept. 27.
  • Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in The Bronx.
  • The Crusaders have won at least a share of the last six Patriot League Championships and are 24-2 in conference action in the 2020s.
