Crusaders fall to Fordham in Patriot League opener

BRONX, N.Y. — The Holy Cross football team overcame an early deficit, but was unable to hold off Fordham, falling 26-21 in the Crusaders' Patriot League opener on Saturday, Sept. 27.

Junior running back Jayden Clerveaux totaled 84 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown for the Crusaders. Senior receiver Max Mosey caught seven passes, totaling 70 yards on the day, and junior receiver Charly Mullaly finished with 53 receiving yards.

Junior cornerback Cam Jones had eight solo tackles on the day. Junior linebacker Cam Santee finished with six tackles, including a TFL.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Fordham jumped ahead to a 14-0 lead with 4:12 left in the first quarter.
  • Sophomore starting quarterback Cal Swanson got the Crusaders on the board with a two-yard keeper, making it a 14-7 game with 1:20 left in the first quarter.
  • The Rams responded with a touchdown, but missed the extra point, taking a 20-7 lead early in the second quarter.
  • On Holy Cross' next drive, Swanson converted twice on fourth down, including a six-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end Mason McSweeney on fourth-and-3 to bring Holy Cross within 20-14.
  • After an 18-yard completion to senior tight end Nathan Schillinger and a 37-yard pass to Mullaly, Swanson handed off the ball to Clerveaux for a five-yard touchdown rush to put the Crusaders ahead 21-20 with 2:43 to go in the first half.
  • The Rams missed a field goal in the final seconds of the first half, keeping the Crusaders in the lead heading into halftime.
  • Fordham hit a 36-yard field goal to take a 23-21 advantage with 8:02 left in the third.
  • After a huge gain by the Rams offense midway through the fourth, Holy Cross' defense came up big — capped by a nine-yard sack from Crocetti — to hold Fordham to just a field goal and keep it a one-score game.
  • The Crusaders were unable to score on their next drive, but a three-and-out gave them the ball back with under a minute to go. Holy Cross got the ball to midfield after a fourth-down conversion, but Fordham picked off a pass in the final seconds to secure the victory and complete the second-half shutout of the Crusaders.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • McSweeney's touchdown was the first of his career.
UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross hosts Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 4 for the Crusaders' Homecoming matchup.
  • Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Fitton Field.
