Six different players score in field hockey's win over Merrimack

WORCESTER, Mass. - Six different Crusaders scored in field hockey's 7-0 shutout of Merrimack Sunday afternoon at the Hart Turf Field.

With the win, Holy Cross improves to 1-1 on the season, while Merrimack falls to 0-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A quiet first quarter ended with the Crusaders' outshooting the Warriors 6-1.
  • Holy Cross exploded for four goals in the second quarter, starting with a tip-in goal by senior Kendall Blomquist off a shot across the circle by junior Maguire Sturgis with 12:08 to play in the second frame.
  • Just under three minutes later, sophomore Kendall Brady picked up her first collegiate goal, netting her own rebound.
  • Sturgis picked up her second goal of the season 40 seconds later, sending a back foot shot into the far corner of the goal.
  • Freshman Martina di Gregorio Giralt rounded out the scoring in the second quarter, picking up her first collegiate goal with 35 seconds remaining off a pass from freshman Rachel Egan.
  • Coming out of the halftime break, Egan also picked up her first collegiate goal, intercepting a clear from the Warriors' netminder at the 25 yard line before flipping the ball into the back of the net from the stroke mark with 6:51 remaining in the third frame.
  • Sophomore Jocelyn Monti recorded Holy Cross' first penalty corner goal of the season with 5:04 to play.
  • Sturgis scored her second of the game off a pass by sophomore Judy Rodolakis to bring the score to it's final of 7-0 with just over four minutes to play in the quarter.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Sophomore Mia McCloskey and junior Madison Clark combined for four saves in the shutout win. 
  • Holy Cross outshot Merrimack 33-6 in the match.

UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will return to action at the Hart Turf Field on Friday, Sept. 5 when they host Providence at 6 p.m.
