Three Crusaders net season firsts in 3-1 victory over New Hampshire

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's soccer team hosted New Hampshire (UNH) on Thursday night for a non-conference clash. The Crusaders came out with the 3-1 win over the Wildcats, their first win of the season.

IN GOAL:

  • Holy Cross: Aubrey Haesche (W, 1-1-1), three saves
  • UNH: Caroline Cohen (L, 0-1), one save
  • UNH: Sonja Zeepvat, one save

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Senior midfielder Olivia Perez struck early with junior captain Karenna Beckstein serving up a great ball off the corner. Beckstein found junior forward Charlotte Hanchar, who chipped the ball up to fellow junior forward Abby Cushing. Cushing popped the ball up, Perez connected with the ball midair, and buried it into the top right corner of the net at 3:36. The Wildcats tied the game with a good penalty attempt netted by Abby Maier at 7:22. Midway through the first half, sophomore captain Caroline Bierfeldt served up a long ball to Cushing to strike from about 25 yards out to reclaim the lead in favor of Holy Cross at 23:49. With seven minutes left in the half, junior forward Allison Tighe forced a penalty kick and teammate Beckstein fired it in for the 3-1 result.
  • The Crusaders led the Wildcats 6-5 in shots and 3-2 in corners through 45 minutes.
  • Neither team scored in the second half.
  • Holy Cross led UNH 11-6 in shots, 5-4 in shots on goal, while the Wildcats had the 5-4 advantage in corners to conclude the game.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders (1-3-1) will host Marist (0-4) on Sunday, Aug. 31, for a 3:00 pm kickoff and their Mental Health Awareness game at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium in Worcester, Mass.
