AMHERST, Mass.— The Holy Cross track and field teams competed in the UMass Flagship Spring Opener hosted by UMass Amherst on Saturday, Apr. 5. The men's team finished fourth of eight teams and the women's team tied for third out of 10 competing squads.

The men totaled 84 points and the women tallied 53 points in the meet.

WOMEN'S MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

• Sophomore Grace Ryan broke the 17-year-old javelin school record with a mark of 41.04m to clinch second in the event. The previous record (40.39m) was set by Chantal Couture '10 on April. 19, 2008 at the Holy Cross Invitational. Freshman Mary Zabielski (39.11m, fourth) and sophomore Sienna Horn (35.45m, seventh) also competed in the event.
• Junior Celia Kulis won the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.16.
• Freshman Lily Deforge clinched second in the discus throw (38.73m).
• Senior captain Maura Switzer took second in the pole vault clearing 4.01m.
• Sophomore Gabby Paolella claimed third in the shot put with a mark of 12.58m. Deforge followed in fifth (12.19m).
• Junior Ester Mokonchu took third in the hammer throw (48.25m).
• Freshman Victoria McGowan placed sixth in the triple jump (10.27m).

MEN'S MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

• Freshman Josh Gentchos, won the 100m dash with a time of 10.89. Senior captain Aidan Bergin took third in the event (10.94).
• Junior Jack Ryan won the javelin throwing for 56.33m. 
• Sophomore Aidan Dentice clinched second in the discus throw with a mark of 40.18m. Fellow sophomore CJ Oltmer also competed in the event finishing in eighth (35.31m).
• Sophomore Michael Laflamme took second in the hammer throw with a mark of 52.12m followed by freshman Josh Dymond in third (51.50m).
• Senior captain Brian Fennelly came in second in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.60. Senior Kevin Yatsuhashi also competed in the event (15.48).
• Yatsuhashi claimed third in the high jump with a mark of 1.90m. Sophomore Michel Mondesir placed sixth in the event (1.90m).
• Junior Luke Wadzinski competed in the 400m hurdles crossing the finish at 59.06 for third place.
• Freshman Tireni Asenuga took fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.25m. Sophomore Nate Greenberg finished eighth (5.98m).
• Freshman LJ Hines (12.79m, seventh) and sophomore Logan Mott (12.71m, eighth) competed in the triple jump.
• The 4x100m relay team, including sophomore Matthew Perkins, Bergin, freshman Iain DeBoth and Gentchos, won the event with a time of 41.82.

• The Holy Cross track and field teams will return to action for the Friar Invitational hosted by Providence in Providence, R.I. on Apr. 11 at the Ray Treacy Track at Hendricken Field.
