LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Holy Cross baseball team set a new team steal record during a 1-0 setback to Patriot League foe Bucknell on Saturday afternoon on Depew Field.
The loss sends the Crusaders to 16-19, 7-6 PL on the year while the Bison move to 13-19, 5-8 PL and have clinched the season series over the Crusaders.
Sophomore center fielder
Gianni Royer had the only multi hit performance in the ballgame going 2-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases. Royer's theft of second base in the top of the ninth inning established a new team record for steals in a season (86) passing the old mark of 85 set during the 1999 campaign. Royer ranks second on the team with 19 steals.
The contest was a pitcher's duel as Crusader junior
Danny Macchiarola and Bison starter Tyler O'Neill combined for 15 scoreless innings scattering five hits, five walks while punching out 14 batters. Bucknell walked off the Crusaders in the bottom of the ninth off a throwing error.
STARTING ON THE MOUND:
- Tyler O'Neill: (ND), 8.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, zero earned runs, three walks, six strikeouts.
- Junior Danny Macchiarola: (ND), 7.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, zero earned runs, two walks, eight strikeouts.
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
- Jonathan Adelmann: (W, 2-2), 1.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed, zero earned runs, zero walks, one strikeout.
- Freshman Jake Lenahan: (L , 2-1), 1.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, one run – zero earned, zero walks, zero strikeouts.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Holy Cross had a pair of runners on second and third base with two outs in the top of the second, but Bucknell stranded the Crusaders in scoring position.
- Macchiarola struck out the side in order during the bottom of the second and third frames.
- Bucknell flared a leadoff single in the sixth inning to left field. King, senior second baseman Brendan Jones and senior first baseman Chris Baillargeon combined for their second 6-4-3 double play of the game to erase the runner keeping the game 0-0.
- Royer stole second base in the top of the seventh to tie the single-season team record of 85 steals.
- Bucknell worked a pair of one out walks in the bottom of the seventh. A fielding error loaded the bases. Macchiarola stranded the bases loaded getting a swinging strikeout and a fly out to center to keep the game tied 0-0.
- Bucknell used a walk off error in the bottom of the ninth to take the contest.

- Holy Cross continues their weekend in Lewisburg taking on Bucknell for a conference twinbill on Sunday, April 13.
