WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior forward
Meg Cahalan scored a career-high 25 points as the Holy Cross women's basketball team earned a 60-47 win over Patriot League foe and Turnpike Trophy rival Boston University Saturday afternoon in the Hart Center Arena.
Cahalan was 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) from the field and 5-of-9 (55.5 percent) from beyond the arc with the five triples being a career-best for the Crusaders (15-7, 8-3 PL). She tacked on five rebounds, a block, and a steal with zero turnovers en route to receiving the Rev. George L. O'Brien Award given by Holy Cross Club of Greater Worcester to the Winter Homecoming game MVP.
Senior
Lindsay Berger was the other Crusader to reach double-figures in the game filling the box score with 12 points (5-of-10, 50 percent FG), five rebounds, a career-high matching four blocks and a steal.
For BU (8-14, 2-9 PL), Allison Schwertner led the way with 10 points and eight boards in 25 minutes of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders scored six straight points to begin the game with junior Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly scoring four markers for the 6-0 lead at the 7:28 mark. BU connected on a three to pull within two, 8-6. Junior Kaitlyn Flanagan buried a mid-range jumper and expanded the lead to a quarter high of eight 14-6 with 3:10 left. The Terriers converted a layup to go down three, 16-13 after one.
- BU took their first lead of the game and built the edge to three, 21-18 on the strength of an 8-2 quarter beginning run. Another BU three-ball at the 3:54 mark grew their margin to 24-20. The Crusaders closed the half on a 12-2 run with Cahalan dropping in five points in the scoring stretch for the 32-26 halftime lead.
- Cahalan began the second half canning a pair of triples to open up a double-digit lead in favor of the Crusaders 38-28. A Terrier hoop and harm trimmed the deficit to three, 38-35. Cahalan connected on the next five points for the Crusaders for the 43-35 advantage. Following a BU make, sophomore Hannah Griffin isolated and drove the lane for two at the buzzer making it 49-41 Crusaders.
- Holy Cross pulled away in the fourth dropping the opening eight points of the stanza to lead 57-41 after a sophomore Kendall Eddy lay-in. Cahalan's fifth and final triple opened up the largest lead of the game for either side with 1:42 left.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Holy Cross is 76-24 (.760) in the Hart Center Arena over their last 100 games.
- Cahalan made all five of the Crusader three-pointers on the afternoon. 16 of her 25 points came in the second half with 11 coming in the third quarter.
- Flanagan picked up her fourth turnover free game of the season and the 13th of her career. Holy Cross is 13-0 (1.000) when Flanagan does not turn the ball over in a game.
- Over the last seven games (5-2, .714) the Crusaders are holding opponents 45.6 points per game on 33.0 percent (116-of-351) shooting, 24.6 percent (29-of-118) from three-point land and have a +12.9 scoring margin.
