WORCESTER, Mass. — Freshman guard
Max Green totaled 18 points, five assists and three rebounds, as the Holy Cross men's basketball team defeated Boston University 72-52 at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex on Winter Homecoming weekend. The Crusaders improve to 12-13 on the year and 4-8 in the Patriot League, while the Terriers fall to 12-13 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• Holy Cross made 55.3 percent of its field goal attempts and 82.4 percent of its free throws on the day.
• The Crusaders also held Boston University to 35.1 percent shooting from the field and 31.8 percent shooting from three-point range, while forcing 15 turnovers.
• Sophomore guard
DeAndre Williams finished with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, while senior forward
Caleb Kenney added 12 points, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
• The Terriers were led by Azmar Abdullah with 14 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The game was close early on, with Boston University holding an 8-7 lead after the first five minutes of play.
• Holy Cross scored the next eight points to pull in front, and went on to increase its advantage to 17 points (31-14) with five minutes left before the break.
• The Terriers came back to close out the half with a 13-4 spurt, cutting the Crusader lead to eight (35-27) heading into the locker room.
• The game stayed close early in the second half, and Holy Cross led by just four (45-41) with 12 minutes remaining.
• But the Crusaders then went on a 15-3 run, including five points from freshman forward
Aidan Richard, to take a commanding 16-point lead (60-44).
• Holy Cross would lead by at least 14 points the rest of the way, eventually pulling away to win by 20.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• The 20-point margin of victory was the Crusaders largest against a Patriot League opponent since defeating Army 60-38 on March 6, 2016, in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament.
• Holy Cross' .553 field goal percentage was its best against a Division I opponent this season.
• Following the contest, Green received the Martin J. O'Malley Award as the most outstanding player in Holy Cross' Winter Homecoming game.
