WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's hockey team hosted Providence for the Winter Homecoming and Purple Out game on Friday, Feb. 7. A close game ended in a 3-2 loss to the Friars.
BETWEEN THE PIPES:
- Holy Cross: Abby Hornung (L, 5-13-2), 31 saves
- Providence: Hope Walinski (W, 16-8-3), 16 saves
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the first period, sophomore forward Lulu Rourke converted on the power-play with a beautiful top-shelf goal fed in by junior forward Charlotte Sonntag and freshman Hannah Deck at 13:26. With 16 seconds left in the period, Providence's Reichen Kirchmair tied the game up 1-1.
- Another late goal scored by the Friars' Audrey Knapp right off the faceoff stole the lead in favor of Providence at 18:23.
- In the third period, the Friars furthered their lead with a goal by Lily Martinson at 4:50. The Crusaders pulled Hornung from the goal to have the extra skater advantage and Deck fired a laser from the point to bring Holy Cross within one goal at 19:47. She was assisted by senior forwards Madison Michals and Mackenzie King. The Crusaders ran out of time to tie the score and the Friars claimed the 3-2 victory in regulation.
- Providence led Holy Cross 34-19 in shots on goal while Holy Cross had the 33-20 advantage in face-offs to conclude the game.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
- Deck earned her first two-point game with her assist and goal on the game
- Rourke scored her third goal of the season
UP NEXT:
- The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Feb. 8 when they travel to Storrs, Conn. for a 7:30 pm game at UConn in the Toscano Family Ice Forum.
