ARLINGTON, Va. – The Holy Cross baseball team was upended 8-0 in nonconference action by George Washington on Saturday afternoon on Tucker Field at Bancroft Park.
Sophomore center fielder
Gianni Royer extended his hitting streak to four games going 1-for-4 for the Crusaders (1-3). Royer has hits in seven of his last eight games dating back to the 2024 season. The Revolutionaries (1-3) belted five extra base hits, all doubles in the contest.
STARTING ON THE MOUND:
- Michael Foltz Jr.: W, (1-1), 7.0 innings pitched, six hits allowed, walk, eight strikeouts.
- Junior Danny Macchiarola: L, (0-2), 5.0 innings pitched eight hits allowed, four earned runs, two walks, three strikeouts.
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
- Max Haug: 2.0 innings pitched one hit allowed, one strikeout.
- Freshman Jake Lenahan: 2.2 innings pitched, six hits allowed, four earned runs, walk, two strikeouts.
- Junior Alexander Deutsch: 0.1 innings pitched, walk.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Robbie Lavey: 3-for-4, double, two RBI, two runs scored, walk.
- Ellis Schwartz: 3-for-5, double, two RBI.
- Sam Gates: 2-for-5, double, RBI, run scored, two stolen bases.
- Senior Jimmy King: 2-for-4, double.
- Junior CJ Egrie: 2-for-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- George Washington got on the board first in the home half of the third via a double down the left field line for the 1-0 advantage.
- Holy Cross put runners on first and second with one away in the fourth, but grounded into a double play to end the scoring threat.
- A double, sacrifice bunt, a walk and a steal had runners at second and third with one away in the fourth. A two-bagger cleared the bases and built the hosts' lead to 3-0.
- An RBI groundout in the fifth expanded the margin to 4-0 in favor of the Revolutionaries.
- Holy Cross loaded the bases in the seventh when sophomore Van Coughlin legged out an infield single with two down. The GW pitcher struck out the next batter to thwart the scoring chance.
- The home team tacked on four insurance runs in the eighth to double up the score late.
DUE UP:
- The Crusaders wrap up the series tomorrow with a doubleheader against the Revolutionaries
- First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
