ARLINGTON, Va. – The Holy Cross baseball sophomore center fielder
Gianni Royer extended his hitting streak to six games as the Crusaders split a pair of games at nonconference foe George Washington on Sunday, falling to the Revolutionaries 6-3 in game one before capturing game two 8-2.
Royer combined to go 5-for-13 (.385) in the series with a pair of doubles, three RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored for the Crusaders (2-4) against the Revolutionaries (2-4). He posted hits in the opening six games of the season and in nine of his last 10 dating back to 2024.
During the game two victory, Holy Cross was aggressive on the bases posting five stolen bases while their middle of the lineup was 6-for-13 (.462) with a pair of doubles, three RBI, two steals, and four runs scored. Five different players had multi hit efforts.
GAME ONE: GEORGE WASHINGTON 6, HOLY CROSS 3
STARTING ON THE MOUND:
- Teddy Brennan: ND, 4.1 innings pitched, four hits allowed, two runs – one earned, six walks, five strikeouts.
- Senior Sean Scanlon: L, (0-1), 4.0 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, four earned runs, two walks, three strikeouts.
OUT OF THE BULLPEN:
- Andrew Cutler: W, (1-0), 3.2 innings pitched, three hits allowed, one earned run, zero walks, four strikeouts.
- Cade Davis: S, (1), 1.0 innings pitched.
- Freshman Derek Volz: 3.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, two earned runs, zero walks, two strikeouts.
- Freshman Macro Citro: 1.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed, walk, strikeout.
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:
- Ellis Schwartz: 2-for-3, home run, three RBI, run scored.
- Cristino Tufano: 2-for-5, home run, two RBI, two runs scored.
- Jude Clough: 2-for-3, double, RBI, run scored, walk.
- Gianni Royer: 2-for-5, double, RBI.
- Sophomore Colin Brown: 1-for-4, home run, run scored RBI, stolen base.
- Sophomore Ryan Grundy: 1-for-4, home run, RBI, run scored.
- Junior CJ Egrie: 0-for-2, run scored, three walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Egrie walked to lead off the game and advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt. Senior Chris Baillargeon walked on a full count putting runners at the corners. Royer singled through the left side for the 1-0 Crusader lead.
- Some two out hitting for the hosts put them ahead 3-1 in the home half of the first.
- Holy Cross loaded the bases in the top of the second with one out. George Washington got out of trouble with a pair of strikeouts to end the frame.
- In the fourth, Grundy demolished a 1-1 pitch over the left center field fence for his first collegiate homer to trim the deficit to one, 3-2.
- The Crusaders packed the bases full again with one away, but flew into a double-play to end the threat.
- GW added insurance in the fifth loading the bases and scratching across a run via a sacrifice fly for the 4-2 lead.
- The hosts hit a two-run homer in the sixth to expand the margin to 6-2.
- Brown connected on his first homer of the year in the eighth in a 2-0 pitch putting the Crusaders down three, 6-3.
GAME TWO: HOLY CROSS 8, GEORGE WASHINGTON 2

- Junior Jaden Wywoda: W, (1-0), 5.1 innings pitched, four hits allowed, one earned run, two walks, three strikeouts.
- Shugy Klein L, (0-1), 4.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, two earned runs, walk, strikeout.

- Senior Luke LeMond: 2.2 innings pitched, three hits allowed, one earned run, no walks, three strikeouts.
- Freshman Pedro Leon: 1.0 innings pitched, two hits allowed, zero runs, two strikeouts.
- Declan Wywoda: 2.0 innings pitched, three hits allowed, earned run, strikeout.
- Matt Bruno: 0.1 innings pitched, one hit allowed, two runs – one earned, walk.
- Drew Oppenheim: 0.0 innings pitched, one hit allowed, two runs – zero earned.
- Tyler Blankenship: 0.2 innings pitched, one hit allowed, one earned run, one walk, two strikeouts.
- Gavin Miller: 2.0 innings pitched, zero hits allowed, zero earned runs, one walk, three strikeouts.

- Senior Jimmy King: 2-for-5, run scored, stolen base.
- Sophomore Van Coughlin: 2-for-5, triple.
- Ryan Grundy: 2-for-5, two RBI.
- Sean Scanlon: 1-for-4 double, run scored, walk.
- Sophomore Alex Sandell: 0-for-2, two runs scored, two walks, two stolen bases.
- Charlie Rogan: 2-for-3, home run, RBI, run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Baillargeon and Royer smacked back-to-back doubles with two outs to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead in the first.
- GW tied the game in the bottom of the second with a solo home run.
- In the fourth, a two out RBI by Grundy pushed the Crusaders back ahead 2-1.
- Royer singled in the fifth through the left side to plate Scanlon who reached via double for the 3-1 Holy Cross edge.
- A sacrifice fly in the sixth pulled the Revolutionaries within a run, 3-2.
- Egrie was a menace on the base paths in the seventh, walking then stealing a pair of bags. Baillargeon knocked him home with an RBI single for an important insurance run. Holy Cross added four more runs to take an 8-2 lead.
DUE UP:
- The Crusaders begin their eight game spring break trip with a doubleheader at Towson (3-3) on Saturday, March 1.
- First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
