WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross baseball freshman left-handed pitcher
Derek Volz has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week the league offices announced on Monday afternoon.
Volz made his collegiate debut at No. 22 nationally-ranked Auburn on Saturday, Feb. 15 factoring into the decision to pick up his first career win in the 4-2 Crusader upset. He came out of the bullpen and tossed 3.1 innings scattering two hits, an earned run, a walk, and four strikeouts while tallying a 2.70 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and a .167 BAA.
Volz struck out Ike Irish, MLB.com's No. 18 ranked draft prospect swinging for his first career strikeout in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Crusaders (1-2) will travel to George Washington (0-3) for a three game set beginning on Friday, Feb. 21 at 2:30 p.m.
