Women’s basketball falls to Lehigh in overtime

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross women's basketball senior forward Lindsay Berger posted a 15 point and 13 rebound double-double as the Crusaders fell in overtime 69-59 to Patriot League foe Lehigh Saturday afternoon in the Hart Center Arena.
 
Berger was 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) from the field with three assists and two steals for the Crusaders (15-9, 8-5 PL). She was joined in double figures by junior Meg Cahalan who scored a game-high 18 points on 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) shooting with seven rebounds and two triples. Junior Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly filled the box score with nine points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals while classmate Kaitlyn Flanagan dished out a game-best seven dimes.
 
For Lehigh (21-4, 12-1 PL), Maddie Albrecht posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards to go with a game-best four steals.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Donnelly dished to senior Lauren Huber for the first points of the game. Back-to-back passes from sophomore Kendall Eddy to Cahalan on the block built a 6-0 edge. Flanagan made a beautiful skip pass to Eddy in the corner and got a kind roll for the 9-2 Crusader lead with 3:24 left. Huber dished to Berger underneath putting the hosts ahead 15-7 through one.
  • A Berger layup put Holy Cross ahead 10, 17-7. A 16-2 run by Lehigh gave them their first multiple score lead at 23-19. Berger converted an and1 to trim the deficit to one, 23-22. Cahalan's second chance bucket underneath put Holy Cross ahead 29-27 with under a minute to go. Lehigh tied the game 29-29 at the intermission.
  • Holy Cross gained a six point lead 37-31 when Huber banked in a layup from in close at the 7:25 mark. The Crusader run expanded to 11-4 when Donnelly found Huber again for the 42-33 lead. Holy Cross led 42-35 through 30 minutes.
  • Lehigh began the fourth on a 13-2 run to regain the lead at 48-44. An Eddy triple moved the Crusaders back ahead 49-48. Donnelly found Berger under the hoop for the one point 54-53 edge with 43 seconds left. Ahead by two, Lehigh got a baseline layup with seven seconds left to send the game into overtime.
  • A steal from Berger and coast-to-coast layup put Holy Cross ahead 59-57 with 2:27 to play. Lehigh scored the final 12 points of the game for the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Berger scored nine of her 15 points and grabbed eight of her 13 rebounds in the first half.
  • Holy Cross held Lehigh to single-digit point totals in the first (7) and third quarter (6).
  • Lehigh outscored Holy Cross 34-to-17 in the fourth quarter and overtime.
  • The Crusaders committed 27 turnovers. It marks the first time they recorded 25 or more turnovers in a game since Nov. 13, 2021, at Boston College (29).
  • Holy Cross outrebounded Lehigh 40-to-33.

  • Holy Cross hits the road for a conference battle with Lafayette (7-17, 4-9 PL) on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
