Men’s lacrosse opens season at Providence

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Providence, 15-8, in its season opener Saturday afternoon at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Holy Cross got out to a quick 2-0 lead to open the game on goals by junior Will Messineo 36 seconds in and senior John Mitchell 1:37 into the game. A 4-0 run by Providence gave them the 4-2 lead, before sophomore William Russler scored his first as a Crusader with 13 seconds remaining in the quarter to keep it at a one goal lead going into the break.
  • Providence went on a three-goal run in the middle of the second quarter before Messineo picked up his second of the game to make it 7-4 at halftime.
  • Freshman Adam Ottomanelli scored his first collegiate goal 35 seconds into the third period to narrow the Providence lead to two, though the Friars' eight goal run over the remainder of the third and into the fourth extended the lead to 15-5.
  • Sophomore Jude Lynch, Ottomanelli, and sophomore Jon-Luke Duley each scored over the final 4:19 to bring the score to its final of 15-8.
BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Junior JR Long got the nod in net for the Crusaders, recording 22 saves in his first career start.
  • Juniors Julian Jenkins and Michael Rincon led the way with two caused turnovers each, while senior Matt Carbonell led with four ground ball pickups.
UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will travel to Charlotte, N.C. to face Queens on Friday, Feb. 7.
  • Game time is set for 4 p.m.
