Men's ice hockey completes weekend sweep of Niagara

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's ice hockey completed its weekend sweep of Niagara, downing the Purple Eagles by a 6-2 score on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center Rink.

With the win, Holy Cross improves to 5-5-1 (5-1-1 AHA), while Niagara moves to 3-6-0 (0-4-0 AHA).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Junior Jack Stockfish got things started quickly for the Crusaders, netting the first goal of the game 15 seconds into the matchup, tipping a shot by sophomore Owain Johnston into the back of the net.
  • Sophomore Owen Kim extended the lead to 2-0 with under five minutes to play in the opening frame, sending a wrist shot over the shoulder of the Niagara netminder off a pass from junior Ty Gagno.
  • After a review, Niagara cut the Holy Cross lead in half with just over 17 minutes to play in the second period, before tying the game at 2-2 with a power play goal eight minutes into the third period.
  • Senior Matt DeBoer regained the lead at 3-2 four minutes later with a power play goal, before senior Michael Abgrall scored his fifth goal in as many games to extend the lead to 4-2.
  • With a power play opportunity at hand, Niagara pulled their netminder in favor of a two-man advantage, but a costly turnover led to a shorthanded, empty net goal by Abgrall and a 5-2 Holy Cross lead.
  • With 20 seconds to play in the contest and Holy Cross on the power play, sophomore Jarrod Smith tipped in a shot by freshman Quinn McCall for his first collegiate goal.

BEYOND THE BOX:

  • Freshman Danick Leroux made 40 stops in net en route to his first collegiate win.
  • Stockfish led both sides with 12 faceoff wins.
  • Holy Cross blocked 16 shots to Niagara's nine, with Smith and Kim leading the way with three each.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross will hit the road to face Air Force next weekend. Game time is set for 9 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 14 and Saturday, Nov. 15 at Cadet Ice Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
