Women’s soccer picks up first conference shutout against Navy

Perez nets the game-winner, Haesche makes career-high 11 saves

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's soccer team hosted Navy on Sunday afternoon for its Breast Cancer Awareness game. The Crusaders picked up three points at home in a 1-0 conference shutout over Navy.

IN GOAL:

  • Holy Cross: Aubrey Haesche (W, 4-3-4), 11 saves
  • Navy: Natasha Stramrood (L, 7-4-1), four saves

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Neither team scored while Haesche led Stramrood 6-2 in saves in the first half.
  • The Midshipmen led the Crusaders 10-5 in shots while each team had three corners apiece through 45 minutes. 
  • At 54:49 in the second half, junior captain Karenna Beckstein served up a strong free kick that connected with junior forward Abby Cushing, who headed the ball over to an open senior midfielder Olivia Perez to net the game-winner. Haesche had a new career-high 11 saves to end the competition.
  • Holy Cross led Navy 22-13 in shots, 11-5 in shots on goal, while the Crusaders had the 7-5 advantage in corners to conclude the game.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders (4-5-4, 1-1-2) will travel to Lafayette (3-4-5, 3-0-3) on Saturday, Oct. 11, for a 5:00 pm kickoff at Mike Bourger Field at Oaks Stadium in Easton, Pa.
