Men’s ice hockey falls to Northeastern in season opener

BOSTON, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team fell to Northeastern, 6-4, in their season opener Saturday night at Matthews Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior Jack Stockfish got the Crusaders on the board first 3:42 into the opening frame. Sophomore Noah Eyre forced the turnover in the offensive zone, finding junior Brody Gagno on the boards, who flipped the puck to Stockfish for the wrist shot.
  • Northeastern came alive in the back half of the period, netting three goals in 13:26 to take the 3-0 lead into the break.
  • Junior David Hymovitch picked up his first goal as a Crusader 2:28 into the middle frame to cut the Northeaster lead to 3-2. Battling along the boards, junior Ty Gagno got the puck to junior Connor Welsh who drew the defense in before sending a crossing pass to an open Hymovitch on the right side of the goal for the score.
  • The Huskies extended the lead back to two just 34 seconds later.
  • Junior Timothy Heinke netted his first of the season with 7:30 to play in the final period of regulation to cut the Huskies lead to 4-3. Finding the puck loose in the crease after shots by sophomore Matt Kursonis and senior Mack Oliphant, Heinke knocked the puck past the outstretched netminder.
  • Northeastern responded just over five minutes later to extend the lead back to two.
  • After pulling the goalie in favor of the extra attacker, junior Will Elias found the back of the net for his first score of the season, sending a shot from the blue line past the Huskies netminder.
  • Northeastern found the empty net with 1:18 to play to bring the score to its final of 6-4.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Eyre's assist was his first point as a Crusader.
  • Senior Louden Hogg recorded 18 saves in net.
  • Eyre and sophomore Owain Johnston led both sides with four blocked shots each.
  • Kursonis led both sides with 16 face-off wins, finishing with a .762 win percentage at the dot (16-21).

UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will face another Hockey East opponent in Maine next weekend in Orono.
  • The two-game set at Alfond Arena is set for Friday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 11. Both games are scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
