WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross football team came up short against Colgate in Patriot League action, falling 29-28 on Saturday, Oct. 25.
Junior running back
Jayden Clerveaux rushed for 79 yards on 18 carries, while senior
Nyeoti Punni rushed for 49 yards. Freshman receiver
Lincoln Fisher had two touchdown receptions on the day; sophomore
Ty Curran led the Crusaders with 43 yards on three catches.
Sophomore linebacker
Lathan Croley had a career-best 15 tackles and contributed on a tackle for loss. Junior corner
Cam Jones tallied eight tackles and broke up two passes; junior safety
Garrett Baldwin finished with eight tackles.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Colgate scored on its first drive of the game, taking a 7-0 lead at the 8:22 mark of the first quarter.
- The Crusaders responded with a nine-play, 67-yard drive that featured a 23-yard reception by Curran and was capped by a one-yard touchdown rush by freshman quarterback Dominic Campanile.
- Sophomore quarterback Braden Graham, making his second collegiate start, threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Fisher early in the second quarter to put the Crusaders ahead, 14-7, with 14:10 to go in the half.
- Colgate got the ball to the Holy Cross 12-yard line late in the second quarter, but Croley and junior Cam Santee teamed up for a third-down tackle for a loss of five yards, forcing the Raiders to settle for a field goal with a minute and a half to go in the half.
- Graham and Fisher connected again on Holy Cross' first drive of the second half, extending the lead to 21-10 with 8:26 left in the third.
- On the Raiders' next drive, they had a three-and-out — punctuated by a 15-yard sack by fifth-year Joseph Townsend.
- On the ensuing punt, senior Max Mosey broke multiple tackles to return the ball 47 yards for a touchdown; the Crusaders led 28-10 with 7:50 left in the third.
- The Raiders scored on their next drive, but missed the point after, making it a 28-16 game. That was the start of a streak of 19 unanswered points by Colgate; they had a nine-yard touchdown to take the lead with 2:35 to go in the game.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Sophomore Alijah Cason, who entered the weekend as the national lead in yards per kick return, averaged 28 yards per return on Saturday.
- Mosey's score was the first punt return touchdown of his career. He is averaging 17 yards per punt return this season.
UP NEXT:
- Holy Cross will host Lafayette on Saturday, Nov. 1 in Patriot League action.
- Kickoff for Senior Day at Fitton Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
