WORCESTER, Mass. — The Holy Cross football team fell short against Lafayette in a 21-13 result on Saturday, Nov. 1.
Junior running back
Jayden Clerveaux carried the ball 17 times for a total of 135 rushing yards, a season high. Senior receiver
Max Mosey had a strong all-around day, totaling 64 receiving yards while also returning a punt 59 yards for a touchdown. In his first extended collegiate action, freshman quarterback
Dominic Campanile completed 17 of his 22 passes, totaling 127 yards in the air.
Junior linebacker
Cam Santee had a game-high 13 tackles, with a strip sack and a quarterback hurry. Senior safety
Tommy Bestpitch finished with nine tackles, and junior cornerback
Cam Jones had eight tackles and a pair of pass breakups.
Lafayette's Kente Edwards won the Dr. Edward N. Anderson Award, which is presented annually by the Holy Cross Club of Greater Worcester to the outstanding player in the Family Weekend game. Edwards finished the game with a pair of rushing touchdowns and 146 rushing yards.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Senior defensive end Colin Reynolds recovered a fumble after Santee's strip sack midway through the first, but Lafayette forced a fumble on the next play, giving the Leopards the ball back immediately at the Crusaders' 30-yard line. Edwards would score later on that drive with a 10-yard rush to give Lafayette a 7-0 lead after the first quarter.
- In a low-scoring first half, Reynolds and sophomore Jordan Pritchard-Sewell combined for a tackle for loss on fourth down to give the Crusaders the ball back with 3:14 to go in the second quarter. Holy Cross ended the quarter with a 21-yard field goal from senior Luis Palenzuela, making it a 7-3 game heading into halftime.
- On Holy Cross' first drive of the second half, Clerveaux's 67-yard run helped move the Crusaders into the red zone. Palenzuela eventually connected on a 29-yard field goal with 7:35 left in the third quarter to bring the Crusaders within 7-6.
- After the Holy Cross defense forced a three-and-out, Mosey returned the ensuing punt 59 yards for a touchdown, giving Holy Cross its first lead of the day at 13-7.
- Lafayette immediately responded, with a pair of deep passes setting up a short touchdown rush to put the Leopards back in the lead,14-13, with 2:56 to go in the third.
- The Leopards extended their advantage to 21-13 with 2:39 left on another touchdown run from Edwards.
- In the final minutes, Holy Cross drove the ball to the Lafayette 12-yard line — highlighted by a 26-yard completion from Campanile to sophomore Alijah Cason — but a fourth-down sack by the Leopards thwarted a late game-tying attempt by the Crusaders.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Following Saturday's contest, the Crusaders celebrated the 20 members of their senior and fifth-year classes during a Senior Day ceremony.
- Mosey has scored a touchdown on a punt return during back-to-back weeks.
